Early Tuesday morning the Dallas Cowboys signed the 30th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, by the San Francisco 49ers for what it’s worth, wide receiver AJ Jenkins.
Jenkins is an alumni of the University of Illinois and had quite the productive year during his senior season. He put together a 90 catch season for 1,276 yards and 8 TDs. His most notable performance was on October 1st, 2011 when in a game against Northwestern AJ exploded for 12 catches, 268 yards, and 3 TDs.
The signing of AJ shouldn’t be read into too much at this point. With Dez Bryant absent from OTAs the Cowboys are going to need another body in there to catch some passes. In order to make room on the roster for Jenkins the Cowboys waived wide receiver Chris Boyd.
AJ is still only 25 years old and has had other NFL teams kick the tires on him recently. He spent the last two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs after being traded for another first round flameout, Jon Baldwin. If he can impress the coaching staff during OTAs, and perhaps if he makes it to training camp, he might be able to find a way to contribute to this team.
