If you were to travel back in time to 1951 and attend the “Milk Bowl” Pee Wee Championship Game in Thorndale, Texas then you’ll see Jim Thorpe. If you didn’t know Jim Thorpe is arguably the greatest football player, and maybe even athlete, to ever live. The Pro Football Hall of Fame is in Canton, Ohio because of him. Well after that game Mr. Thorpe shook hands with the one and only Lee Roy Caffey.
Texas A&M
Caffey would grow up and attend Texas A&M University, where he played linebacker AND led the Aggies in rushing in 1961. He developed quite the reputation around the country as a football stud and found himself taken in the 7th round of the 1963 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles (He was also a 4th round choice of the AFL’s Houston Oilers).
Green Bay Packers
It only took a year before Caffey would be traded to Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers where he starred. He ran the 100-yard dash (yes, 100!) in 10 seconds, making him one of the fastest linebackers in the NFL. Do that math (I know it’s hard). 100 yards in 10 seconds… Lee Roy Caffey could move!
Caffey was part of the 1965 World Championship Packers and part of their crew that won the first two Super Bowls. He was one-third of the Green Bay Packers’ incredible linebacking corps, Pro Football Hall of Famers Ray Nitschke and Dave Robinson being the others.
Dallas Cowboys
Lee Roy made a pit stop in Chicago, where he played alongside Pro Football Hall of Famer Dick Butkus before he landed in Dallas in 1971. Caffey’s experience (the guy had already won three world championships for crying out loud) helped lead the young Cowboys to the ultimate prize for the first time in franchise history.
Greatest 60 in Dallas Cowboys History: Lee Roy Caffey
While Lee Roy Caffey only played one year for the Dallas Cowboys his place in Pro Football History is enough to deem him the Greatest 60 in Dallas Cowboys History. Lee Roy played with some of the greatest people to ever play the game while sustaining success himself. He is the first Texas A&M Aggie to ever play in and win a Super Bowl, having done so three times. He gave a lot to this great game and contributed to some of its more legendary moments.
