Although the Cowboys have had their recent rash of injuries at varying positions, the front office and Will Mcclay don’t seem to be interested in bringing those two to camp.
Roster upgrades and acquiring depth is a year-round job for all 32 teams in the NFL. With that being said, there’s a reason why the players who are most often mentioned are still free agents.
There are currently 2,880 players on rosters in training camps participating in strength and conditioning, reading playbooks, and learning the nuances of life in the NFL. I’m willing to bet my last dollar that Will McClay and his staff have their eyes on every single one of them.
The change in the Cowboys front office philosophy is all about their newfound belief in the scouting department.
Think back to the 2013 season when the defensive line was devastated and played what seemed to be 722 different combinations of guys who were brought in off their couches on a Wednesday and played that Sunday.
Excitement began to build during the 2014 draft when the sliding of QB Funny Money Manziel and his asinine hand gestures, ultimately fell to the Cowboys. But instead of 
picking Funny Money, the Cowboys pick was a boring old offensive guard, Zack Martin, who turned out to be an All-Pro as a rookie.
Had anyone heard of the other Johnson—Gus Johnson—when the announcement was made that he was joining the roster?
It’s more than possible that this front office could bring in a running back, a defensive lineman or any other position as a camp body to take reps in practice and preseason games. And, who knows, one might end up sticking around.
If the decision is in fact made that a player needs to be added to a specific position, set your sights on September 1st when teams make their initial roster cuts to 75.
We all know the scouting department has compiled a list of names from all 31 teams’ possible roster cuts and players that may become available via trade should the front office deem it necessary to add a player.
The one thing that everyone has learned is that Will McClay has assembled an outstanding scouting department and they excel at bringing in talented players to compete for roster spots.
There’s no doubt that players will be added, we just don’t know who or when that will happen. The one thing that we know for sure is that we can trust Will McClay to make the right decision.
