When the 1976 NFL Draft rolled around the Dallas Cowboys had the 27th pick for the first time in their franchise history (the Cowboys also picked 27th in this year’s draft).

They decided to continue the trend of firsts when they addressed a position that they never had in the first round before. Dallas took a cornerback from Wyoming who would go on to become the Greatest 25 in Dallas Cowboys History.

Aaron Kyle

With current Cowboys Dez Bryant, Joseph Randle, Tyler Patmon, and Dan Bailey… fans are well aware that the Oklahoma State University mascot is also a Cowboy. Well so is the University of Wyoming where Aaron Kyle hailed from.

Kyle, like most rookies, was a contributor on the special teams unit for a majority of his rookie year. Like a 16-year-old getting his driver’s license, Aaron’s time to shine came as a sophomore.

Kyle! Kyle! Kyle!

In 1977 Kyle replaced future Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Mel Renfro in the starting lineup at the right corner position. He held his own on the famed Doomsday Defense, but he had a particularly great day on the biggest one of them all, Super Bowl XII.

Aaron picked off Craig Morton late in the first quarter and five plays later the Cowboys capitalized with a field goal that stretched their lead to two scores.

After one of the worst performances of his life, Norris Weese replaced Denver quarterback Craig Morton. Weese bridged the gap and with the Broncos trailing Dallas 10-20 in the middle of the fourth, hope was alive.

With a turnover off of one Bronco QB, Kyle just had to make things even. The Cowboys got to Weese on third down causing him to fumble, and Kyle pounced on it like a batch of freshly baked cookies.

One play later the Cowboys called a trick play – Robert Newhouse threw the game-clinching touchdown to Golden Richards. World Champs.

#25: Aaron Kyle

Kyle played four seasons in the silver and blue before joining, ironically, the Denver Broncos.

In his Cowboy tenure he contributed to one of the five biggest wins in franchise history and was a member of what I believe to be the finest team the Cowboys have ever fielded – the 1977 squad.

Cowboy fans all over the world are hoping that the current 25, Lance Dunbar, will be as instrumental of a cog in the 6th biggest win in franchise history similar to the way Aaron Kyle was. We are all thankful to Aaron Kyle that he came up big when it mattered most, making him the Greatest 25 in Dallas Cowboys History.

Check back tomorrow to find out who the Greatest 24 in Dallas Cowboys History is!
