The 2015 Dallas Cowboys season kicks off on Sunday Night! Exciting, right?

What’s even more exciting is the hot-off-the-press news that the Dallas Cowboys have signed Defensive Tackle Tyrone Crawford to a long-term contract for 5 years worth $45 million.

UPDATE: According to Cowboys Insider Mike Fisher, Crawford’s deal is actually for 6 years with $45.675 million available.

Taken in the 3rd round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Boise State, Tyrone really broke out last season as the Cowboys broke out as NFC contenders. He was an integral piece to the team that won the NFC East, and under Rod Marinelli’s guidance Crawford was in the face of many opposing quarterbacks.

The Cowboys have made it very obvious that the trenches are the priority for them as it is no secret how they have bolstered the offensive line. The Crawford signing helps anchor the defensive line and ensures the future of it. Tyrone figures to have an even better season in 2015 than he did in 2014 and is starting to get that hype on a national level.

The long-term signing of Crawford means that the Dallas Cowboys now have him, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Randy Gregory under contract until at least 2017. This is a a very young, very talented, and very aggressive core of a defense.

This signing also indicates that the Cowboys consider Crawford to be an essential part of their team. Typically at this time of year extensions are given to players of that caliber – for instance AJ Green of the Cincinnati Bengals agreed to a new contract on Friday.

Teams are looking to lock up their most important and most valuable pieces before the season begins so that they can have all of that under wraps as they hunt for a championship. With Tyrone Crawford now taken care of, the Cowboys are going hunting for Super Bowl #6.
