Smooth Watchdog: No Matter The Result, Don’t Pull A Yahoo Sports

Walter Yeates

After the Cowboys fell to 0-1 last year after being soundly defeated by the 49ers, Yahoo Sports writer Dan Wetzel jumped to lofty conclusions. No matter the result of the Sunday Night game against the New York Giants, I have one piece of advice.

Do Not Pull A Dan Wetzel

Win or Lose, this one game will not be the final statement on this football season.

In 1993, the Dallas Cowboys began the season 0-2, most of you will immediately recall the final result of that season. In contrast, the 2008 Cowboys started the season 3-0 and finished 9-7, failing to reach the playoffs.

Yet, it will not stop journalists from writing lofty proclamations. They know it will generate traffic and that is really their only goal. Just look at the scenario Wetzel painted, where the Kevin Sumlin led Texas A&M Aggies would storm through their season making Sumlin an attractive NFL Head Coach candidate following the 2014 season. While assuming the Cowboys would have an abysmal season leading to the ousting of Jason Garrett as Head Coach.

The Aggies had a disappointing 8-5 season while the Cowboys finished 12-4.

Sumlin may one day become an NFL Head Coach, but it definitely wasn’t going to follow that season. Wetzel published his article a day after the Aggies defeated Lamar 73-3. So, pay close attention to what the facts of the situation are when reading these articles.

Jerry Jones has made mistakes in the past by following Wetzel’s advice and following “the roars of the crowd,” now he follows the words of Will McClay which has led to the quick turnaround of the franchise.

So let’s hope that continues.
