There are a few things that I know will for sure happen tomorrow:
- The sun will rise.
- Chip Kelly will make a batch of smoothies for the little Eagles in his nest.
- The Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots will square off.
While, yes, the Dallas Cowboys are welcoming in the reigning Champions of the World into their building, fans are optimistic. Any given Sunday, right? Why not us? In the words of the little kid from Angels In The Outfield, “It could happen!”.
We’ll see what happens in the return of Rolando McClain, the debut of Greg Hardy, and the first game without Lance Dunbar for America’s Team against the Patriots. Consider this your definitive guide to the history between these two teams that bleed red, white, and blue.
- While these two teams will clash on the field at AT&T Stadium, the Cowboys opened the iconic Texas Stadium on October 24th, 1971 with a 44-21 victory over the Patriots.
- These two teams have squared off a total of 11 times. The Cowboys were a perfect 7-0 having never lost to New England until December 5th, 1999. That was the first domino to fall in a series of losses against New England for the Cowboys as the Patriots have gone 4-0 against the Cowboys since those first seven games. That’s right, the Cowboys won the first seven and the Patriots won the next four. This series is all about streaks.
- The Cowboys have both won and lost two games to the Patriots by double digits.
- Seven contests between these two have been decided by a touchdown or less and five games have had even narrower margins being decided by six points or less.
- Dallas leads New England 234-216 in points across all 11 games played.
- Jason Witten has played three games in his career against the New England Patriots. He has totaled 8 catches for 101 yards and a touchdown.
- Speaking of Jason Witten… the 2003 draftee has 59 career touchdowns. The tight end for the Patriots, Rob Gronkowski, was drafted in 2010 and already has 58 career touchdowns. Jason Witten is a more complete tight end, in fact one of the greatest to ever play the game, and will one day reside in the Pro Football Hall of Fame… this just speaks to the accomplishments of Gronkowski in such a small window of time.
- The Dallas Cowboys, having lost the last four games to the Patriots, have yet to beat New England this century. Their last victory happened on December 15th, 1996. This obviously means that the Dallas Cowboys have never beaten Tom Brady.
- Speaking of the Super Bowl XLIX MVP, this is Tom Brady’s first trip to AT&T Stadium.
- The Cowboys are actually 4-1 all-time against New England when the game takes place in Dallas, the lone loss coming in 2007 when New England had a perfect regular season before losing Super Bowl XLII to the New York Giants.
Hopefully after Sunday the Dallas Cowboys side of this history will have one more win!
