Staff Wars: Why Starting Matt Cassel Is The Correct Choice

Walter Yeates

Yesterday, Shane introduced you to the new Staff Wars series here at Inside The Star, with his defense of why Brandon Weeden should have remained the starter. Today it is time for me to awaken the force!

Why Cassel?

I will give Shane credit, he made a compelling argument as to why Brandon Weeden should remain the starter. With the defense back to full health – aside from Orlando Scandrick – they’ll be a formidable force that will get after the Quarterback.

But that simply is not enough.

As I outlined earlier in the week, the offense needs a new attitude. Christine Michael and La’el Collins are going to add grit to the unit, which is what Cassel will do as well. He won’t be afraid to take chances down the field.

Weeden was far too cautious and that resulted in too many wasted drives. I have no doubt that the Cowboys could have defeated both the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints if Weeden could have just made a few more plays with his arm.

Cassel can make those plays.

With the chaos in the NFC East, the Cowboys can put themselves back in the drivers seat. The Giants, Seahawks, Eagles, and Buccaneers can all be defeated with an improved offense. While Tony Romo will be eligible to return for the Dolphins game on November 22nd, that is a winnable game without him.

If the Cowboys run the table they are 7-3 and 4-0 within the NFC East before Romo returns. Is that worth making a switch at Quarterback?

Definitely.
