This week, fellow Staff Writers Shane Denney and Walter Yeates debuted our newest series – Staff Wars. The topic of debate: Was benching Brandon Weeden the right move?
Shane started the discussion by defending Weeden.
Yesterday, Walter supported the bye-week change of Matt Cassel.
I agree with Walter in this case, and my reasoning can be summed up in one word –
COMPETITION.
If you were able to sit through the awkwardness that was this Brandon Weeden interview, there is likely one quote from Weeden that holds any relevance. “I’m one play away again”, he said, which is as true as it is plausible.
Cassel does have some injury history, and also may turn out to be completely ineffective. I am a firm believer that competition creates greatness, and Jason Garrett exemplified that philosophy throughout training camp.
The Cowboys’ defensive line, by virtue of practice, got better every day by working against the talented Cowboys’ offensive line. The secondary was tested by a strong receiving core. All throughout camp, the daily competitiveness prepared the Cowboys for a pivotal 2015 season.
The only player who did not face serious competition was Brandon Weeden, who was basically assured the backup QB spot after seeing just a small sample of Dustin Vaughan and Jameill Showers.
Yes, Weeden had his moments of greatness (fourth quarter touchdown to Terrance Williams at New Orleans) and, for the most part, has done a viable job as a backup quarterback. However, the bottom line is that this team needs to find a way to stay afloat in the wide-open NFC East.
If a refreshing change of signal callers, as well as the addition of Christine Michael to the running back rotation, can spark this team to do just that then the move to Cassel was the right idea.
If not, Weeden is one play away, and should be playing with an extreme sense of urgency if he sees the field again this season.
What do you think of the Cowboys’ QB situation? I’ll take your calls on the matter during this Friday’s Upon Further Review (973-655-4256, listening info above), as well as on Twitter @ShoreSportsNJ!
that is a good change keep Brandon waiting on the sideline Matt Cassel is the better choice
Well, like Weeden said, he better be ready on that sideline. But let’s see what Cassel has.
Thanks for reading Robert. Would love to hear from you on UFR tomorrow, 4-7 on wmscradio.com.
