Dallas Cowboys: Checking Out Matt Miller’s Mock Draft

Ryan Ratty

For any of the people that follow the NFL Draft, there may not be a better insider to follow than Matt Miller. Working for Bleacher Report, Miller has consistently been one of the top analysts and one of the brightest minds in the draft industry. Let’s take a look at who he picked for the Dallas Cowboys in his latest three-round mock draft.

Round 1, 8th Overall – Joey Bosa, DE, Ohio State

I think Cowboys fans as a whole would be ecstatic if this were the pick. People believe Joey Bosa will be one of the top picks, but Miller is predicting a slide for Bosa because he may not be well-suited for a 3-4 defense. Regardless, this would be a terrific pick for the Cowboys.

If Dallas decides to let Greg Hardy walk in free agency, which they should, a combination of Bosa, Randy Gregory, and Demarcus Lawrence would be one to be reckoned with through the next few years. Bosa is an athletic freak. He’s extremely strong, quick around the edge, and he excels against the run and the pass.

Round 2, 39th Overall – Connor Cook, QB, Michigan State

It’s no secret that the Cowboys need to look into investing in their quarterback of the future. Tony Romo will be here over the next few years, but he may just be one left clavicle injury from his career being over. If the Cowboys go defense in Round 1, drafting a quarterback in Round 2 makes sense.

Connor Cook isn’t a better prospect than Paxton Lynch and Jared Goff, but he’s a guy that’s excelled for a real good college program. Michigan State has been terrific over the past few years and a large reason why has been the play of Cook.

Standing tall in the pocket, Cook is a guy who doesn’t make a lot of mistakes and he gets the ball out to his playmakers. Cook is coming from a pro-style offense and his intelligence wouldn’t make for a tough transition to the NFL.

Round 3, 71st Overall – Derrick Henry, RB, Alabama

On a two-year deal, Darren McFadden will be back in 2016. He hasn’t necessarily been horrible after starting the past month and a half, but he’s been decent. There isn’t a Todd Gurley in this draft class, but one that makes sense to fit Dallas’ zone-blocking scheme is Alabama’s Derrick Henry.

I’m worried about the workload Henry has had over his college career. Nevertheless, Henry fits the power running back mold at 6-foot-3, 240 pounds. He runs with authority and he has good vision, two traits that will remind people of the DeMarco Murray Cowboys fans witnessed in 2014, not the 2015 version.

If this draft were to happen, it would be a real nice start to a draft. I’ve always been a big fan of drafting players from big collegiate programs. One from Ohio State, one from Michigan State, and one from Alabama.

By drafting Bosa, the Cowboys would get a potential superstar, franchise piece at defensive end. By drafting Cook, the Cowboys would get Romo’s replacement and a capable backup for the rest of Romo’s career. By drafting Henry, the Cowboys would get a potential workhorse back that can wear defenses out. So far, this draft would fill needs and make this franchise a better one.

  1. I haven't done my homework on next years draft yet because I want to know where we draft first. But if we were to end ip drafting 8th, I agree that this would be a great start with Basa (the beast), (Captain) Cook, and Henry – nice to have a big, strong, downhill running back. Could they all fall that far? If so, I'd call it a success. Lets follow that up with Safety, Corner, and Wide Receiver. If we can get diamonds in the rough at those positions, we'd be in great shape to make a run next year!

  2. Hate to keep critiquing grammar stuff but I'm sure you guys like to edit and keep posts looking clean: "a combination of Bosa, Randy Gregory, and Demarcus Lawrence would be one to be reckoned with thought the next few weeks. Boss is an athletic freak." I think you meant 'through the next few years' rather than 'thought the next few weeks'. And then just a typo on Bosa coming out at Boss. Hope this isn't annoying
