Gavin Escobar Out for the Season With a Torn Achilles

On Saturday night against the New York Jets, the Dallas Cowboys not only lost, but they took a blow to their offense by losing Gavin Escobar to a season-ending achilles injury. A third-year tight end out of San Diego State, Escobar caught just eight passes for 64 yards on the season, one of which was a touchdown that came in Week 1.

After the game, during Jason Garrett’s press conference, it was reported that Escobar tore his achilles. Without Tony Romo at quarterback, Escobar’s usage has been limited throughout the season. With Romo in, Escobar sees more usage in different subpackages. Matt Cassel and Brandon Weeden weren’t capable of running some of those subpackages.

With the season-ending injury to Escobar, James Hanna will likely see a bigger role in the offense. Even with the injury, the question of Escobar’s role in the offense will be a big question mark this offseason. There’s no telling how much longer Jason Witten has in his career, but Escobar was supposed to be the guy for the future. It’ll be up to him to come back from this injury and prove that he has a place on this team for the long-term.
