November 22nd, 2012 was a long time ago… but it’s a day that Dallas Cowboys fans haven’t forgotten in the last three and a half years.
It was on that day that rookie phenomenon Robert Griffin III and his Washington Redskins came into the house of the division rival Dallas Cowboys and beat them by a score of 38-31. To make matters worse the loss came during an annual tradition for the Cowboys… the Thanksgiving Day Game.
That was the last time that these two met on Turkey Day, and the seventh total time they’ve done so with stuffing on the table, and it was the only time that the Redskins have ever beaten the Cowboys on the fourth Thursday in November.
Rumor has it, according to Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch, that the Cowboys will get a chance at revenge when the rolls pop out of the oven this year (I love rolls more than you can possibly imagine).
The Cowboys have played the Raiders, Eagles, and Panthers all since that fateful day in 2012 against Washington and as it is one of the most primetime games of the season, it makes a ton of sense for the NFL to focus on one of its most historic matchups.
Consider that the game will air on FOX this year (Buck and Troy! Hooray…) and it makes even more sense. This rivalry simply belongs on Thanksgiving. It just feels right. In fact, Cowboys and Redskins was the only thing missing out at Plymouth Rock when the pilgrims first landed – those chumps didn’t even know who Tony Romo was!
There’s still a whole heck of a lot that will go on between now and then, assuming this does indeed come to fruition, and one of those things could be that Robert Griffin III could be on the opposite sideline when that game kicks off.
The Cowboys are rumored (today is all about rumors, sheesh!) to be in the running for the former Heisman Trophy Winner when the Redskins inevitably release him, and it would be pretty ironic to welcome them to town with him in silver and blue.
We’ll have to wait and see!
