2016 Mock Draft: Haynie Picks 1-34

Jess Haynie

I like to wait until the dust settles from free agency before doing mock drafts. Well, it would seem that time has come.

A couple of things you should know before you start reading:

  • Please comment with your thoughts on my picks. If you’re a fan of another team I really value your insider perspective and will use it to make my next mocks better.
  • These are predictions of what teams WILL do and not necessarily what they SHOULD.
  • I don’t get into predicting trades. It’s too much of a crapshoot to spend mental energy on.

1. Titans

Laremy Tunsil, OT, Ole Miss

It’s not often that a pick is this easy when it doesn’t involve a quarterback, but Tennessee and Tunsil are a virtual lock.
[get_helmet team=”cle” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

2. Browns

Carson Wentz, QB, North Dakota St.

The Browns signed RG3 but are still likely to bring in a rookie for competition and their long-term prospects. Wentz has more upside than Jared Goff.
[get_helmet team=”sd” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

3. Chargers

Jalen Ramsey, DB, Florida St.

Ramsey is the consensus as the best overall defensive player in the draft and fills a big need for San Diego.
[get_helmet team=”dal” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

4. Cowboys

Myles Jack, LB, UCLA

The Jason Garrett/Stephen Jones era is all about acquiring the best talent over filling needs. Despite their issues at DE, Dallas takes Jack with the long term in view.
[get_helmet team=”jax” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

5. Jaguars

Joey Bosa, DE, Ohio St.

Jacksonville pairs Bosa with last year’s pick, Dante Fowler, for a hopefully dynamic duo.
[get_helmet team=”bal” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

6. Ravens

DeForest Buckner, DL, Oregon

Buckner has the potential to be a freak as a 3-4 DE, which Baltimore just so happens to play.
[get_helmet team=”sf” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

7. 49ers

Jared Goff, QB, California

Colin Kaepernick is still there but the situation seems too toxic to last. The Niners will be happy to land Goff and move on.
[get_helmet team=”phi” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

8. Eagles

Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Ohio St.

To the chagrin of Cowboys fans everywhere, Philly takes the elusive Elliott to help them chase that elusive Super Bowl win.
[get_helmet team=”tb” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

9. Bucs

Emmanuel Ogbah, DE, Oklahoma St.

Tampa’s front office seems to like numbers and Ogbah has them where it counts; 22.5 sacks the last two years and a 4.63 40-yard dash.
[get_helmet team=”nyg” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

10. Giants

Ronnie Stanley, OT, Notre Dame

New York has an older quarterback to protect and an average group of running backs to work with. They follow the Cowboys’ example and take their third offensive lineman in four years.
[get_helmet team=”chi” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

11. Bears

Vernon Hargreaves, CB, Florida

Chicago will be thrilled to have Hargreaves slide to them at this pick. He’s better than many people think and fills their biggest need.
[get_helmet team=”no” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

12. Saints

Laquon Treadwell, WR, Ole Miss

New Orleans’ receivers have plenty of speed already but no size, which makes Treadwell a good counterbalance.
[get_helmet team=”mia” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

13. Dolphins

Shaq Lawson, DE, Clemson

Miami replaces Olivier Vernon with a kid who will probably be far more productive than Vernon ever was.
[get_helmet team=”oak” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

14. Raiders

Eli Apple, CB, Ohio State

Liking bigger and more physical corners, Oakland takes Apple and tries to teach him how to avoid penalties.
[get_helmet team=”la” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

15. Rams

Reggie Ragland, LB, Alabama

I’m not sold on Paxton Lynch and I don’t think Jeff Fisher will be, either. Ragland fills the void left by James Laurinaitis’ departure.
[get_helmet team=”det” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

16. Lions

A’Shawn Robinson, DT, Alabama

Having lost their top two defensive tackles to free agency over the last few years, Detroit gets some big help with Robinson.
[get_helmet team=”atl” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

17. Falcons

Darron Lee, LB, Ohio State

Needing help all over their defense, Atlanta takes the linebacker who who had the fastest 40 at the combine.
[get_helmet team=”ind” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

18. Colts

Jack Conklin, OL, Michigan St.

After a miserable 2015 season, Indy gets back to basics and builds around Andrew Luck in the most fundamental way possible.
[get_helmet team=”buf” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

19. Bills

Robert Nkemdiche, DL, Ole Miss

The Ryan boys are desperate and don’t mind taking chances on suspect characters. Nkemdiche is this year’s Randy Gregory but doesn’t have to wait as long to hear his name.
[get_helmet team=”nyj” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

20. Jets

Leonard Floyd, DE/OLB, Georgia

They will be ecstatic in New York to land Floyd this far down the board. Some have him going in the #8-12 range.
[get_helmet team=”was” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

21. Washington

Sheldon Rankins, DT, Louisville

Aaron Donald has helped lift the stigma a little on smallish defensive tackles, helping a guy like Rankins get taken this high.
[get_helmet team=”hou” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

22. Texans

Michael Thomas, WR, Ohio State

After putting up a reported 4.38 40-yard time at his pro day, the 6’3″ Thomas zooms past the other receivers on the board.
[get_helmet team=”min” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

23. Vikings

Josh Doctson, WR, TCU

Minnesota seems sure to take a receiver and will have good ones to pick from. Doctson has the best upside of the remaining options.
[get_helmet team=”cin” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

24. Bengals

Kevin Dodd, DE, Clemson

The knock on Dodd is that he benefited from playing opposite Shaq Lawson in college. Teaming him up with Carlos Dunlap should alleviate that concern.
[get_helmet team=”pit” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

25. Steelers

William Jackson, CB, Houston

Cornerback is clearly their biggest need and Jackson provides good value for Pittsburgh at this spot.
[get_helmet team=”sea” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

26. Seahawks

Taylor Decker, OT, Ohio State

Jason Spriggs may have more upside but Seattle needs someone ready to help right away. Decker is a strong run blocker and that’s the key to Seattle’s offense.
[get_helmet team=”gb” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

27. Packers

Kendall Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech

They love ballhawks in Green Bay and Fuller is that. He could be a steal this far down the board coming off an injury year.
[get_helmet team=”kc” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

28. Chiefs

 Mackensie Alexander, CB, Clemson

This is a little high for Alexander for KC needs a corner badly and would be waiting too long for their next pick.
[get_helmet team=”ari” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

29. Cardinals

Keanu Neal, S, Florida

There’s a steep drop off from Neal to the next best safety, so Arizona covers a big need here.
[get_helmet team=”car” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

30. Panthers

Jason Spriggs, OT, Indiana

Good upside for the 30th pick. Michael Oher was their worst offensive lineman last year and an upgrade is needed.
[get_helmet team=”den” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

31. Broncos

Paxton Lynch, QB, Memphis

Until Denver makes some other move at quarterback this offseason you have to go with Lynch.
[get_helmet team=”cle” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

32. Browns

Will Fuller, WR, Notre Dame

Combining Fuller’s speed with the hopeful return of Josh Gordon could do wonders for their offense.
[get_helmet team=”ten” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

33. Titans

Noah Spence, DE, Eastern KY

After helping their own QB in the first round, Tennessee looks to attack opposing QBs with their next pick.
[get_helmet team=”dal” face=”r” align=”center” size=”sm”]

34. Cowboys

Carl Nassib, DE, Penn State

Nassib’s leadership and work ethic are things that tickle Jason Garrett’s fancy. Leading the nation in sacks last year doesn’t hurt, either. Nassib’s size gives him inside-outside flexibility, which Dallas also likes.

And there you have it!  I’ll be looking at the Cowboys picks in more detail over the next few days, going in depth as to why I made the decisions that I did. Be on the lookout for those articles.

  1. If those are our first 2 picks, then I'd say that we screwed the pooch, badly. Jack is okay, but I just don't think we need a top-5 pick going to a LB. I don't know much about Nassib though, so I can't comment there. I do like the pick at #31 – Lynch to the Broncos is a smart choice. I think he'll do better in their system than most.

    • More on this coming tomorrow's article, but Jack at #4 is the Zack Martin pick of this draft. It's not our biggest need right now, like guard wasn't in 2014, but it's a long-term view on a guy who fits our scheme beautifully and can be a key piece for the next decade. As for the 2nd Round pick, who would you want that wasn't already off the board in the mock?

      • i believe the kidd out of Alabama is better than Jack, Ragland if were talking linebackers and he is pro ready…I do not want another yr like last yr…are we putting to much into Tony Romo anyway? Get the QB Geof from California pure passer and can think he will pick up the system, no offense but I give Romo 2-3 yrs at best…..

        • What makes you think Ragland is better than Jack given where both are rated? Seems like everyone disagrees.

  2. On paper Nassib seems like a heck of a pick.

I'm also not high on Myles Jack, but without accounting for trade scenarios it is probably the BPA pick at #4 especially with the knowledge that the Cowboys aren't high on Bosa.

If those were the first 3 picks, I would take just about any trade to drop back to #7 or #9 and target someone like Hargreaves or even Zeke Elliott. Then of course you all know I'm 100% comfortable with taking Goff, too, so there's that. lol

    • I'm with you on the trade back unless they think Jack is truly elite. If so then grab it while you can because you're not getting elite talent in the #7-#12 range unless you can snag Elliott.

  3. I see your point on Jack, but still. And I like Hargreaves III, but not at #4. At #4, without a trade down because it's no certainly that the guy you want will be there, I'd have to go either Elliott or Goff. With Ramsey off the board, there's no one else good for #4 in my mind. So my order is: 1. Ramsey, 2. Elliott, 3. Goff, 4. Jack.

  4. Yeah gotta go with the QB before Jack, And I like Jack a lot, and agree with your points in that adding him hopefully helps the defense for the next 10 years, but at the same time he's an injury prone LB that was selected above a potential franchise QB if we pull the trigger on him.

  5. I think I want Jack before a QB. He's so versatile. That's what this defense is all about… Versatility.

  7. That's just a hard comparison to make, Ragland will be a hell of a player, and is ready to be a really solid, hard-hitting linebacker from the start of training camp. Jack is ready to do that along with play some safety and running back. I'll let the pro scouts handle this one haha…

  8. That Jack can play RB or LB means squat to me. It does not help his valuation. Every snap he plays taxes him so playing both sides just means he'll do both half assed, instead of playing one really well. Myles Jack as a LB/RB is a non-argument. And the NFL tends to agree with this.

  9. Well we know he's not a RB at the NFL level, but it just speaks to his athletic ability that he can do both. They also say that LBs and RBs have to have similar skill sets, as both positions require seeing the holes in the front and attacking them.

  10. Yes, that's all true, but the one key difference between them is the deal breaker for me on considering that ability… Ball carriers just look for the hole and to get through it, but tackles have to be able to take the right angle. We've seen far too much bad tackling these last few years only to bring in a guy because he has all this athleticism only to find out he can't do job #1 – tackle the ball carrier. If he's taken top-5, he shouldn't miss most tackles. It's high expectations for a pick like this, just like people are still down on Mo Claiborne after he had a 2015 season worth keeping him around for; he's still not living up to his draft pick. Just my 2 cents.

  11. Makes sense, I honestly haven't watched enough of Jack with my own eyes to tell you one way or another if he is as sound of a tackler as we would like.

  12. dear Jessie— Although i can understand your reasoning in selecting Myles Jack…lets just say the knee does not check out…and as you posted…Ramsey is already taken…the cowboys lets say dont want Bosa…and they are not interested in Tunsil..nor do they think either QB is worth a #4 pick..which scenario makes more sense..selecting Elliot or trading back?..and if trading back is the option considering the lack of elite talent in this years draft….what would be the likelihood a partner could be found on draft day?…is #4 still too rich for Elliot?…then would any of us be out of our mind choosing Spence at #4…all things considered from my novice and lowly level of making a good pick…i still would select Elliot…he has the least amount of risk at #4…and lastly..does anyone truly believe that Bosa was holding back this year to protect his draft status?…i sure dont…thank you for your consideration in this matter..sincerely Robert

    • Great stuff, Robert! Thanks for the response. On Elliott… I'm not a fan of spending such a high pick on any RB and paying them $5M/year for the next four seasons. I think we've built and offensive line that can get league-leading production out of solid and bargain-priced rushers. However, if Ramsey's gone and Jack's knee is bad then Elliott may be the only truly elite talent left at #4. I'm not going to freak out if they take him. On Spence… I'm worried about him as a 4-3 end. Think he's too small and is more of a 3-4 OLB. I wouldn't want him so high in the draft. On Bosa… Lots of people believe that he was holding back. However, they said the same about Jadaveon Clowney and it's not like he's set the league on fire since entering. There are lots of reason for concern with Bosa and I'm hoping Dallas has a better option in mind.

  13. Hey Jess how is it going?…..tell me what you think about the possibility of cowboys pulling the trigger and selecting either Wentz or Goff or lynch at 4?…we know we have to begin the journey preparing for Romo's departure…Do you think Wentz or Goff or Lynch…rate in top 5?….it is a lot of money for whoever gets taken at 4….I wish there was a better predictor
for NFL QB success out of college….i do have a good predictor for selecting a QB….if there is a way to measure how fast a QB can decipher their options from the time the ball is snapped up to 2.5 sec afterward….that is the one main quality that Romo has and he has stated such..anyway thanks for the good read..sincerely Robert

    • The "QB at #4" question is the biggest x-factor in this draft and also the thing we'll have the least certainty of until it does/doesn't happen. Only the Cowboys know how much they believe in one of these rookies as the future of the franchise. Romo is still here and that provides them security to pass on QB this year if they aren't completely in love with one of the prospects. As you said, the ability to predict QB success in the NFL is very slim. I am probably going to do an article before the draft about just how ugly the history of drafted quarterbacks is, especially for those clamoring for us to take one in the middle rounds. The odds are very much against you.

  14. Jess….in my post…it was 2 point 5 or 2 and 1/2 secs..not 25 seconds….just making sure because decimal point may not be easy to read
