Cowboys Wrap Up 2016 Draft w/ Four 6th-Rounders

Jess Haynie

The Cowboys sat out of the fifth and seventh rounds this year with no selections. However, they were a major presence in the sixth round with four draft picks.

The first of those picks was cornerback Anthony Brown out of Perdue, whose selection was covered in more detail by our own Sean Martion.

Here is a brief rundown of our final three picks from the 2016 Draft:

Central Michigan

The easiest way to tell you about Frazier is to point to his NFL.com profile, which compared him to our own Barry Church. Frazier is a prototypical strong safety whose best work is in run support and closer to the line of scrimmage.

Frazier is considered a special teams ace and a big hitter who will have to work on his coverage skills to become a full-time player. With Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox on expiring contracts, it’s no surprise that Dallas wanted to bring in a young player for development and potential help down the road.

Cowboys Headlines - Cowboys Wrap Up 2016 Draft w/ Four 6th-Rounders 1#216 – Darius Jackson, RB,
Eastern Michigan

At 6’1″ and 220 pounds, Jackson posted incredible numbers at his pro day to get on the NFL radar. His 4.35 forty-yard time would have been second-best among all running backs at the combine and he would’ve been in the top five or better in all other categories.

The knock on Jackson is poor instincts and vision for the position. Dallas is clearly hoping that they coach those things into Jackson and reap the benefit from his incredible physical gifts.

Cowboys Headlines - Cowboys Wrap Up 2016 Draft w/ Four 6th-Rounders 2#217 – Rico Gathers, TE, Baylor

Gathers hasn’t played football since he was in junior high, being focused on basketball through last year. Not seeing a future in the NBA, he’s decided to try and be an enormous tight end. The Cowboys must think he has a chance.

There’s not much to say about a guy with no college game to look at. All we know is that he has been training for the NFL since basketball season and that he had workouts with the Cowboys and many other teams leading up to the draft. At 6’8″ and 275 pounds, he could be a matchup nightmare and incredible goal line threat if there’s a football player somewhere in that body.
