The Dallas Cowboys & Their Own Three Musketeers

Brian Martin

Aramis, Porthos, and Athos; all names that should sound somewhat familiar to the majority of you, but really have absolutely zero connection to the Dallas Cowboys, or do they?

If you’re not quite sure where you’ve heard those names before, that’s okay. They were first popularized in the novel The Three Musketeers, written by Alexandre Dumas that was published way back in 1844.

Since the publication of Dumas’ novel we have seen numerous movies, TV series, and even cartoons depicting the Musketeer’s adventures.

For those unaware, I’ll try to familiarize you with the story

The Musketeers (the King’s guard) has been disbanded and the three most famous Musketeers (Aramis, Porthos, and Athos) are somewhat muddling around in their lives until they meet a young want to be Musketeer in D’Artagnan. D’Artagnan has prepared his entire life to venture to Paris in order to join the Musketeers, only to find out that they have been disbanded.

Of course, the first meeting between D’Artagnan and Aramis, Porthos, and Athos has a somewhat unexpected ending. D’Artagnan offended all three earlier when running through the streets of Paris and has a duel scheduled with them later in the afternoon. Upon arriving for his duel he finally learns who he will be facing with sword in hand. The very same men he came to Paris to join up with.

Before the duel can get started, the Cardinal’s guards show up and intend to place everyone under arrest for illegal dueling. D’Artagnan and the Three Musketeers join forces and defeat the Cardinal’s guards, and in turn form a strong bond that will last through many more adventures.

So, by now you may be asking yourself why is this guy talking about the Three Musketeers when he should be discussing the Dallas Cowboys…

Well, I think the entire scenario I just mentioned is almost identical to what is currently shaping up for the Cowboys. Also, remember the mantra used by the Musketeers, because it could be a really good one for the Dallas Cowboys to adopt.Cowboys Headlines - Dallas Cowboys: The Three Musketeers 1

Jason Witten, Tony Romo, and Dez Bryant would obviously be the Three Musketeers, or Aramis, Porthos, and Athos.

Witten, Romo, and Bryant are all well respected players in the NFL and among the best at their individual positions, much like the Three Musketeers. They haven’t really been muddling through their careers, but there has always seemed to be something keeping them from taking the next step as a threesome.

It took D’Artagnan to give the Musketeers purpose once again and I think that is exactly what running back Ezekiel Elliott can do for Witten, Romo, and Bryant.

I know what you’re thinking. Thank goodness he finally got to the point! Right?

Sometimes the best thing to get things going again is an injection of some new blood, and I’m predicting that is exactly what Zeke Elliott will provide when the 2016 season finally gets underway.

It’s no secret how much Elliott should help improve the overall offensive play, especially if both Tony Romo and Dez Bryant are able to come back 100% healthy and remain so for the entire season.

The blueprint that was so effective in 2014 should once again come into play in 2016 behind a strong running game led by Elliott.

It takes a team to win a championship, but with a strong foursome in Witten, Romo, Bryant, and Elliott, the Cowboys organization has a really good chance of making a deep playoff run and possibly a chance at the Super Bowl.

Now, the only thing left to do is come up with a really good nickname for the foursome, much like The Triplets back in the 1990s.

The Fearsome Foursome? The Fantastic 4? The 4 Horsemen?
