Cowboys Waive DE/DT Shaneil Jenkins

On any other weekend, the Cowboys’ release of Shaneil Jenkins would’ve received much more attention. However, we’ve been a little preoccupied with a certain quarterback’s vertebrae.

Cowboys Headlines - Cowboys Waive DE/DT Shaneil JenkinsYesterday the Cowboys did indeed waive Jenkins, a versatile defensive lineman who appeared likely to make their Week One roster. Jenkins had a sack in each of the team’s first two preseason games and was getting pressure on other plays. He had been signed just a few days before the preseason opener after being waived by the Denver Broncos.

Shaneil Jenkins injured his hamstring in practice last week and missed last Thursday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks. There has been rumor that the injury was worse than simple strain and also there are some concerns about Jenkins’ knee. The decision to release Jenkins, given the team’s overall situation on the defensive line, suggests those rumors are accurate.

While Jenkins had clear value and would’ve been a nice piece for the defensive line rotation, the loss is likely just a short-term problem. Had he made the team, Jenkins was probably the guy who would’ve been released when DeMarcus Lawrence came back from suspension.

If Shaneil Jenkins clears waivers, Dallas could retain his rights and place him on Injured Reserve for future development. Given what we’ve seen so far, he seems to be worth it.
