We made it everyone!!! Week one of the National Football League has finally arrived. That means that Fantasy Football is finally here. No more mock drafts or preseason rankings… Now it gets real. Well, Fantasy Real.
Each week with the positional rankings, I’m going to offer what you came here for; Dallas Cowboys focused Fantasy Football information.
I’ll offer you a breakdown of the matchup for your and my quarterback (insert TO sniffles). Whether it’s Dak Prescott early on, or Tony Romo down the home stretch, this is your home for Dallas Cowboys Fantasy Football insight.
In addition to that, I’ll give you a player to sit and a player to start that you might not have thought of. Hopefully these choices won’t be obvious to you.
Don’t forget to check out InsideTheStar.com for breakdowns and predictions of the real game happening on the field.
Dallas Cowboys Quarterback
Count me as one of the guys who is super hyped by what Dak Prescott showed during the preseason. Yes, it was against base “vanilla” defenses. Those defenses were the “Blue Bell – Homemade Vanilla” of Vanilla Defenses.
The Los Angeles Rams, Miami Dolphins, and Seattle Seahawks offer some of the best front seven players in the NFL. Yes, they weren’t scheming to stop Dak Prescott, but they weren’t trying to let him score, either.
His preseason play gave us a glimpse of what we might have in the future at the quarterback.
All told, I’m not starting him in Fantasy Football.
At best right now, he’s an upside-QB2 on your bench or a starter in two quarterback leagues and 16+ team leagues. In 10, 12, 14 team leagues, there are guys and match ups I like better than Dak Prescott in his first professional start.
One to Start
For this one, I’m looking outside of the top 14 quarterbacks in my rankings to give you someone who could have a big week.
That person for me this week is Robert Griffin III.
Philadelphia has a pretty good front four that will get after the Cleveland Browns quarterback. But the Browns have shown during the preseason that they are going to throw it deep and throw it deep a lot.
Sure Josh Gordon isn’t available until week 5, but with Corey Coleman, Terrell Pryor (yes the former Ohio St. quarterback), Gary Barnridge, Andrew Hawkins, and Duke Johnson, Griffin has plenty of people to throw it to.
Flawless Fantasy Prediction: 300 yards, 3 TDs, and 1 interception passing, 25 yards rushing.
One to Sit
If you were ever thinking about not starting Cam Newton as your quarterback, week 1 at the Denver Broncos would be the week to do it.
I’m sure I’ll take some flak for this, but let me explain a bit.
I’m not a Cam Newton hater by any stretch of the imagination. I also don’t own any Cam Newton shares on any of my fantasy teams, but it’s not because I don’t like the player, just don’t like the price. This week I don’t like the matchup.
The Carolina Panther quarterback has a career completion percentage under 60-percent. Against the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50, Cam Newton only completed 44% of his passes on 41 attempts.
On a regular basis the Denver Broncos’ pass rush was able to get to Newton with pressure. During the Super Bowl they were able to force and recover two fumbles.
Newton did have 45 yards rushing on the day, and will probably get you some points on the ground this week. I am not so confident that he will have a much more improved day against the Broncos on Thursday.
Using Standard Scoring, Cam Newton would have only netted 9.1 fantasy points in Super Bowl 50. I think he’s a bit better, but not by much.
Flawless Fantasy Prediction: 225 yards passing, one touchdown, two interceptions, and 35 yards rushing.
