Cowboys vs Giants: Injury Report

Jess Haynie

We’re just two days away from the Dallas Cowboys’ first game of the 2016 season! They will host a division rival in the New York Giants.

Here is the latest on injuries for each club as they look toward Sunday, based on the most recent practice reports:

James D. Smith/Dallas Cowboys

Cowboys

  • QB Tony Romo (back) – Out
  • G Ronald Leary (groin) – Limited
  • DE Charles Tapper (back) – Out
  • LB Mark Nzeocha (Achilles) – Out

No surprise on Romo, who will be in uniform for at least the next few weeks. Unless you fall down a well, I have a feeling that you’ll know when his status changes.

Leary has been working his way back from a groin strain and should be active on Sunday. Dallas has only Leary and Joe Looney on the roster as interior line reserves, although Chaz Green has taken snaps at guard before.

Tapper, the rookie defensive end, is still dealing with a back injury and hasn’t practiced in several weeks. He will likely be a game day scratch for a while. Dallas will be thin at defensive end but can utilize linebacker Kyle Wilber as a pass rusher.

Still recovering form an Achilles injury, Nzeocha has been out of practice and is unlikely to play this week. He should be active once healthy after a strong camp and early preseason.

Cowboys Headlines - Cowboys vs Giants: Injury ReportGiants

  • DT Robert Thomas (illness) – Out
  • LB Jonathan Casillas (ribs) – Limited
  • S Darian Thompson (shoulder) – Limited

The big news here is Casillas, the Giants’ starting weak side linebacker. He has been nursing a rib injury but has been able to get some practice work in. He will likely be fine for Sunday.

Thompson is a third-round rookie who has recently emerged as the starting free safety. He has been dealing with a shoulder issue the last few weeks. Thompson has been limited in practice but could still play in the season opener.

Thomas is at the bottom of the Giants’ DT rotation and may not have been active either way.
