The Dallas Cowboys offense has been electric this season.
Dak Prescott looks like the future quarterback of the franchise, Ezekiel Elliott has hit his stride, Dez Bryant is back on track, and all of the weapons seem to be clicking.
With all of that being said, this offense has still suffered some of the same struggles of years past, particularly in the red zone. Too many times the Cowboys drove the length of the field, only to come away with three points. Dez was neutralized, Beasley dropped a touchdown, and the offensive line could not get enough of a push for a rushing touchdown.
Last night, all of that seemed to change.
Through two weeks, the Cowboys ended their red zone trips with a touchdown only 50% of the time (4 of 8). Last night, they converted for touchdowns on every red zone trip (4 of 4) en route to the destruction of the Chicago Bears.
The Cowboys scored on every possession of the first half against the New York Giants, but only tallied up 9 points. Settling for field goals cost them dearly, as they only scored 19 total points. Last night, the Cowboys once again scored every time they touched the ball in the first half, but three of those were touchdowns. The difference between 21 and 9 points is clear, and is a key reason the Cowboys improved to 2-1.
As you can see listed below, each game has come with great improvement in the team’s red zone performance.
- Week 1 vs. Giants: 1 for 3
- Week 2 vs. Redskins: 3 for 5
- Week 3 vs Bears: 4 for 4
This team continues to improve in the red zone each week. They are learning how to utilize all of their weapons, including calling on Dak Prescott to run for touchdowns on two separate occasions.
Ezekiel Elliott, Lance Dunbar, and Alfred Morris also have all contributed a red zone rushing touchdown this season, showing the versatility of this offensive attack. Dez Bryant is still a beast who can score from literally anywhere on the field, and play action roll outs and passes to tight ends have been extremely successful these past two weeks.
The Cowboys offense looks to have the red zone figured out, and are finally clicking on all cylinders. I cannot wait to see how the offense develops and continues to improve week by week.
