Back in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys were initially slated to draft 18th overall, but decided to trade down with the San Francisco 49ers instead. The Cowboys received the 49ers first-round draft pick (31st overall) and their third round selection (74th overall) in the trade and turned those draft picks into Travis Frederick and Terrance Williams.
Frederick and Williams instantly became starters for the Cowboys offense and both players are a big reason why the team has been one of the more successful units in the NFL during that time span.
Frederick and his trademark beard has just recently become one of the highest paid centers in the entire NFL, while Williams is in the last year of his rookie contract.
It is unlikely that the Cowboys will be able to afford Williams’ asking price this off-season and if the fans have anything say in the matter, he won’t be returning to the team after the season no matter what.
In fact, there are a lot of Dallas Cowboys fans out there that are wanting the organization to release, cut, or trade Terrance Williams already after only three games into the 2016 season. To me, that’s absolutely ridiculous when you think about it.
I can understand the frustration by a lot of fans after Williams failed to get out of bounds and stop the clock in Week 1 against the New York Giants. It would have given Dan Bailey the chance to kick a 60+ yard field goal, but even that’s no guarantee. I mean just last week Bailey missed a 47 yarder against the Redskins.
In Week 2, Williams failed to record a single reception the against the Washington Redskins. Then, the following week against the Chicago Bears he had four receptions for 88 yards and it looked as if he was getting back on track until he fumbled and lost the ball after his 47 yard reception.
The failure to get out of bounds and the fumble has made Terrance Williams one of the most hated Dallas Cowboys’, whether it is warranted or not.
I for one think that Williams is being unfairly hated on. It amazes me how quickly fans have forgotten how many good plays he has made for the team or how important he is to the offense.
His 2014 season alone helped the Dallas Cowboys reach the playoffs.
Did you forget about his toe tapping catch along the sidelines against the Seattle Seahawks that allowed the Cowboys to come away with the victory on the road?
What about how he pretty much sealed the game against the Detroit Lions, which allowed the Cowboys to advance the 2014 playoffs?
It’s easy to forget all of the good things Terrance Williams has done during his time with the Dallas Cowboys.
Those two bad plays this season are a rarity for Williams. In fact, he has only had three total fumbles in his entire professional career.
I have no doubt that Terrance Williams will fight through all of the negativity and continue to do what is asked of him on the field. That’s just what he does and who he is as a person.
The picture of Williams here to the right is fitting because on the video board above him you can kind of make out the #finishthefight mantra that the entire Cowboys team has adopted.
That is exactly what Williams will do for the rest of the 2016 season and I predict that we will see a lot more good plays from him than bad.
So, try to put your personal feelings aside, because Terrance Williams is needed for the Cowboys offense to fire on all cylinders and find the kind of success that we all want this year.
Do you agree or disagree?
Let me hear your thoughts and opinions about Terrance Williams in the comment section below.
So, your argument to those of us fans who find major fault with him is to remember 2 outstanding plays, yet disregard one play that directly led to a loss in game 1 and another that almost gave momentum back in week 3? Your argument might be bolstered if you could explain how as a #2 receiver he never stepped up last season when Dez went down and the team needed him OR the fact that he disappears for entire stretches of a season and he hasn’t clicked with Prescott because of imprecise route running. Not one of your better articles, Brian.
Williams is by definition a #2 WR so expecting him to play like a #1 last year when Bryant went down was unfair to begin with. Then, you throw in the fact that the QB play was absolutely terrible the entire season and you have a recipe for disappointment. He does disappear sometimes, but I don’t know if that’s due to the game plan or what. There have been times that I’ve reviewed game film and he is open, but the QB just doesn’t go his way. I can understand the frustration, but the point I was trying to make is that he’s still a valuable member to the offense regardless. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment Ethan. Sorry you didn’t enjoy my article.
They dont throw him the ball that often so i have no opinion yet. When he has a killer game you phoney fans will love him!
I agree with you Perry. Williams isn’t usually a big part of the game plan. When he is called upon he makes plays.
First off, you water down the Week 1 incident by claiming Dan Bailey (the most accurate kicker in the NFL) probably would of missed a 60 considering he just missed a RARE 47 yarder last week. Doesn’t take away from the fact that TW should of used common sense to go out of bounds…essentially making our chances of winning from slim to none.
Also, I guess you don’t remember how horrible he played last year with Dez Bryant being hurt all season. He was supposed to step up and take charge of the #1 spot, but actually receded into being none existance.
He’s only good when playing with Tony and that’s almost a rarity.
Cowboys fans have all the reason in the world for wanting him gone!
Stewart, I wasn’t trying to water down his mistake against the Giants. It was possibly a mistake that cost the Cowboys a game, but kicking a 60 yard field goal is no guarantee even with Dan Bailey. I agree that Williams should’ve run out of bounds and stopped the clock. And last year there were a lot of reasons why Williams wasn’t very good. The entire offense wasn’t very good because of the QB play. Regardless, #83 isn’t going anywhere this year and will continue to be a big part of the Cowboys offense. I think he will make more good plays than bad going forward
Here’s what I see in Terrance Williams.
A player who failed to step up his game in 2015 when injuries to Dez and Romo required it. His failure was the pivot point that caused the failures of the replacement QBs.
He takes plays off and is an inconsistent, lazy route runner. Sometimes he blocks sometimes he doesn’t.
And this year we have continued brain dead play when it comes to counts, combined with a lousy attitude. The fumble Sunday night nearly but Chicago back in the game. Football is a team sport; winning consistently requires team cohesion but individual stupidity can cause a loss.
I would have cut him after last season, but certainly would have cut him on the field after the Giant or Chicago game.
I have followed the Cowboys since 1965 and Williams is my most unfavorite player ever. He needs to be released today.
Texzilla,, you make some valid points, but if you released him who would replace his production on the field. Brice Butler has showed potential, but has yet to really make a contribution. Williams will never be a true number one wide receiver, but his stats so far in the NFL are right there with some of the better #2 WRs in the league.
Thanks for putting things in perspective Brian. Personally I have not been a fan of Williams due to the number of drops he has with his body catching style. He was especially bad last year trying to impersonate a #1 receiver. But lets face it..he is not a #1 guy. The gaffe you cited here, failure to get out of bounds, and the fumble are certainly fuel for the haters, but he has been a hero in games past. I would consider him a tradeable asset but only if there was value for it. I seriously doubt they will resign him in the off-season but he could yield a decent comp pick.
You’re welcome Randy. I’m personally kind of hot and cold with Williams. Like you mentioned his body catching really irritates me, but that’s something I’ve learned to expect. I really don’t see any way that they try to trade him away. Like you said they’re going to get a compensatory pick regardless and I don’t think they will be up to afford to re-sign him at the season. I think his price tag will be out of their range.
Bottom line if after receiving the ball for his 47 yrds.com reception if he had went out of bounds instead of turning up field to try to fight for more yards we would have celebrated a.big play and that he had learned something. Instead he had several defenders gathering and took a hit that dislodged the ball.
I could excuse turning up field if only one defender to beat but that wasn’t the case.
I for one don’t think in the heat of the moment that he makes good decisions.
So use him this year when the game isn’t on the linequipment. Then develope someone for next year
John, players are going to try and make plays. Williams hasn’t been known to fumble the ball. In fact, Cole Beasley has twice as many fumbles as Williams, but he’s producing right now so nobody is hating on him. I do agree though, Williams needs to be a more aware of the situation and his surroundings when in the game.
Williams has to go, Period! Brice Butler can replace him! Been a Cowboy fan since Bob Hayes.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment Bruce. I don’t think Williams has to be cut or released. I wouldn’t mind seeing him demoted and allow Brice Butler a chance to show what he can do. You still need depth at the WR position in case of injury and Williams provides that. Consistency has been Williams problem. He can be really good one game and then completely disappear the next. That’s something that he needs to work on.
