Cowboys Add Offensive Line Depth, Sign OG Emmett Cleary

RJ Ochoa

The Dallas Cowboys are 2-1 and have a date set with the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday, but they’ve had a lot going on in and around their team over the last 48 hours.

The status of Dez Bryant’s knee is unknown thanks to the cloud of ambiguity provided by Jerry Jones, DeMarcus Lawrence is supposedly limited (a claim that he denies himself), and La’el Collins is going to Injured Reserve with a foot injury. What did the Cowboys do now? They signed OG Emmett Cleary to give themselves depth along the offensive line.

This move makes a lot of sense as Dallas is now in need of more depth along the Offensive Line due to La’el’s injury. In terms of how the Cowboys will make room for Cleary, they will be putting Collins on IR soon.

Who Is Emmett Cleary?

Fun fact about Emmett… he was born in Tokyo!

Cleary comes to us after having spent time with multiple teams in the NFL: Indianapolis, Tampa Bay, Oakland, Cincinnati, and the New York Giants (where he spent 2015 on the practice squad).

SB Nation’s Big Blue View had speculated that Cleary might get some work at Right Tackle in New York, which is interesting considering that he’s now a Cowboy. The player Cleary is “replacing”, La’el Collins, has long been thought of by members of Cowboys Nation as an option out at Right Tackle as opposed to Doug Free. It seems the Cowboys like having options at their bookends.

The Cowboys are moving on without La’el Collins for now. Ronald Leary and Emmett Cleary are the ways that they are doing that. Let’s see how it all works out.
