Per ESPN’s Todd Archer, the initial reporting about Showers was incorrect. He has been converted from quarterback to safety but remains on the practice squad.

Jameil Showers has been called up from the practice squad to the Cowboys active roster. However, it’s not because Dallas suddenly wants a third quarterback.

Per the following report from Ian Rapoport:

Listed at 6’2″ and 230 lbs. on the team’s official website, Showers certainly has the size for the position. We’ve already seen him in special teams coverage during the preseason.

The timing of this move is interesting after safety Kavon Frazier saw his first game time last week. Dallas may feel that Showers is a better special-teams player and will be waiving Frazier, a sixth-round pick last April.

Dallas has an open roster spot after moving La’el Collins to injured reserve. Showers can take that spot, but that means the Cowboys will need to make another move before activating DeMarcus Lawrence for Sunday’s game.
