After rattling off three straight victories over somewhat lesser opponents, many looked at the Cincinnati Bengals as the new-look Cowboys’ first real test.
Well, the young Cowboys passed with flying colors, dominating in all phases of the game en route to a 28-14 victory and 4-1 overall record.
Scoring on each of their first three possessions, the Cowboys then delivered the knock out blow on their first possession of the 2nd half as rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott went for a 60 yard touchdown run right down the middle of the Bengals’ defense.
The Cowboys dominance on the ground comes after Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict questioned Elliott’s ability earlier this week, crediting the offensive line and (lack of) strength of schedule for his inflated numbers. Elliott and the Cowboys answered this challenge, and dominated the heralded Bengals’ front seven all game.
Dallas now looks to next week when they travel to Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers, looking for their first win in Wisconsin since 2008.
Other Notes
- Outside of a fumble late in the third quarter, Dak Prescott was just about perfect today. Finishing 18/24 for 227 yards and touchdown, Dak once again avoided the fatal interception and commanded a Cowboys offense which gained over 400 yards.
- DeMarcus Lawrence matters. His presence was clearly felt today, as he wreaked havoc on the Bengals’ right offensive tackle during multiple pass rushing situations.
- The Rushmen earned their nickname today. 4 team sacks and some consistent pressure on Andy Dalton kept the Bengals offense on their heels, as they were finally allowed to play with a comfortable lead. (Shout out to Ryan Davis specifically).
- Last but not least, the Cowboys secondary once again played great today. Star receiver AJ Green, who was mostly matched up against Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne, was held to just 50 yards on 4 catches, with most of that coming in garbage time.
- The Cowboys are 4-1 and tied for first place in the NFC East. Enjoy it, Cowboys Nation.
