When Dallas Cowboys franchise quarterback Tony Romo went down with a back injury in Seattle, early indications were that he would be set to return after the team’s week 7 bye week.
Well, here we are, through week 7 and entering a critical week 8 match up with the Philadelphia Eagles for first place in the NFC East and Tony Romo is still not cleared to practice.
Firmly seated in the “Team Romo” camp, I had hoped that even if he couldn’t make it back for this week’s game, he would still be cleared for a triumphant week 9 return against the lowly Cleveland Browns.
Now, according to CBS Sports Analyst Jason La Canfora, even week 9 seems like a stretch. Yesterday La Canfora reported that Romo will undergo one final MRI this week, and then would need to wait to be cleared for full participation in practice. He then reported that the Cowboys have “no expectation” that Romo will be ready for the trip to Cleveland.
While many of us Cowboys faithful are holding out hope that Romo will in fact be ready for that game in Cleveland, it is hard to imagine a player who has missed significant time not practicing for much of a game week and then still playing. But, we have seen Romo magic in person before, so the hope can still be strong.
Dak Prescott’s performance obviously gives the Cowboys some leeway with Romo’s return, as they allow him to get healthy while Dak continues to win games. This freedom is something the Cowboys didn’t have in 2015, resulting in a 4-12 record.
If La Canfora’s report holds true, Romo will be ready for the team’s week 10 visit to Pittsburgh. While we expected that game to feature two of the game’s premier veteran quarterbacks, it seems realistic that game will match up Dak Prescott and Landry Jones for the first time in their careers.
Cowboys Nation is certainly sending well wishes to Tony Romo as he continues his road to recovery.
I think it is great. …Tony Romo and Cowboys need to let Dak Prescott finish the season. Tony needs to step away. ..it’s time.
I agree with you Carol. It is so exciting to watch this Cowboys team with its new backfield. It’s been amazing so far. Let’s keep it going. Go Cowboys!
