DAL 31, WAS 26: Cowboys Ride Early Lead to Victory

Jess Haynie

Dez Bryant, Josh Norman, RedskinsIn one of the biggest games between Dallas and Washington in the modern era, the Cowboys built an early 17-3 lead in the second quarter. They would need every bit of it to fight off Kirk Cousins in the second half and hang on for their tenth-straight win in 2016.

Cousins lit up the Cowboys’ defense for 449 yards and three touchdowns. A late touchdown to Jordan Reed pulled Washington to within five points, but the anticipated onside kick attempt went out of bounds. Dallas got a first-down and ran the clock down for a victory.

The Cowboys moved to 10-1 on the same formula they’ve rode all year; mistake-free football and timely first-down conversions. The offense wasn’t quite as sharp in the second half but tacked on two more touchdowns to maintain the lead.

Their defense gave up plenty of yardage but did a great job, particularly early, of keeping Washington out of the endzone. Washington kicker Dustin Hopkins missed two of four field-goal attempts in the first half, only making the hole deeper.

Other Notes

  • Terrance Williams made one catch all day, but what a catch! Williams had to tap his toes in the endzone while twisting to make the catch along the sideline. It was an even more athletic catch than his big one against the Seahawks in 2014.
  • Kirk Cousins wasn’t sacked all day and saw little pressure, a huger factor in his big yardage. The lack of pass rush is status quo for the Cowboys, but especially frustrating as Washington was missing their starting center and left tackle.
  • Dak Prescott only had 195 passing yards, the lowest of his career. It was the first time he’s had less than 200 yards in a game. However, he did have a new career high with 39 yards rushing.
  • Dez Bryant’s battle with Josh Norman was more explosive after the game than during. The two had to be separated as the teams met at midfield. Cameras captured Dez yelling “Washington needs to get their money back” on his way to the locker room afterward, so we can only imagine the kind of trash talking that took place throughout the day.

  1. This team just keeps finding ways to win. Zeke has more than 100 total yards but Dak only throws for 197, they still score 31 points. It’s becoming an expectation that they are going to score 7 or more.

  2. If Cowboys want to win all the way to Super Bowl they need play good on defend that is how to win every game like playoff and Super Bowl that is why they call defending champ.

  3. Cowboys defend need to attack every one like intercept , sack ,and don`t let them rush over 100 yards they have to sack QB give QB pressure and make them fumble and lost the ball too …
