The Dallas Cowboys currently have the best record in the NFL and are considered one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl, which makes this a good time to be a member of the Dallas Cowboys or a fan of the team. One of the players that is extremely happy about the opportunity he has as a member of the Cowboys is tight end Gavin Escobar.
A few years ago, Escobar didn’t think he would get the opportunity to play in the NFL after being diagnosed with testicular cancer while he was a freshman at San Diego State University. At the time, Escobar was feeling some pain in his groin. After the pain persisted, he was told by team doctors to go get checked for STDs.
After getting checked, Escobar was told he didn’t have STDs, but the pain persisted, prompting him to check the symptoms for testicular cancer out online. Escobar realized he had some of the symptoms, leading his mother to book an appointment with a doctor at UCLA.
A day after meeting with the doctor at UCLA, Escobar had surgery to remove the tumor. Today, Escobar is cancer free, but that hasn’t stopped him from trying to raise awareness for the disease.
During breast cancer awareness month, Escobar is one of the Cowboys players that tries to raise awareness. In the past, he has participated in the Susan G. Komen Dallas County Race for the Cure. This year, he plans on raising more awareness by wearing cleats that have the message “I Survived” and “Feeling Nuts” written on them. He plans on wearing the cleats on Thursday when the Cowboys play the Minnesota Vikings, unless the NFL forbids him from doing so.
Escobar said he has a couple of options to choose from but eventually settled on “Feeling nuts.” He also encouraged anyone feeling pain in their groin area to go see a doctor and talk to friends about it because cancer is nothing to be embarrassed by.
Escobar said he has received a lot of support from the Cowboys and teammates while he has been trying to bring attention to testicular cancer.
Brandon Carr, one of Escobar’s teammates, has also been trying to create more cancer awareness since losing his mother to cancer in 2014. Like Escobar, Carr has encouraged people to get checked for cancer in hopes that the doctors can catch it before it is too late.
Last year, Carr told reporters that breast cancer is a very important issue for women of all ages, which is why he has been encouraging women to get mammograms.
Carr and Escobar have received a lot of support from their teammates, who will also wear special cleats on Thursday.
Rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott is also trying to raise awareness about animal cruelty and pet adoption, while Byron Jones and Terrance Williams are raising awareness for the Flint water crisis.
After years of players being in the news for negative reasons, Cowboys fans have to be excited to have some talented young players trying to raise awareness for worthy causes instead of being in the news for getting in trouble with the law.
