The Dallas Cowboys are in the midst of preparing for the first playoff game, but first they will have to wait out this weekend to see who their opponent will finally be.
While we all wait to see how this weekend plays out, I thought it would be fun to give you an updated mock draft from one of my favorite “draft analyst”, Matt Miller.
Miller recently released a full 7-Round Mock Draft earlier this week, but recently upgraded the first two rounds due to more college players announcing that they would be entering this year’s draft class.
Below are the two players that Matt Miller drafted for the Dallas Cowboys in his updated 2-Round Mock Draft, and I don’t know about you, but I would love if this was the way things actually played out.
32. Dallas Cowboys: Charles Harris, DE, Missouri
It’s no secret that the Dallas Cowboys need as much help with their pass rush as possible, especially with the lingering concerns with DeMarcus Lawrence’s back issues and Randy Gregory’s year-long suspension. That is why it’s no surprise that Matt Miller selected defensive end Charles Harris with the Cowboys first-round draft pick.
Charles Harris (6’3″, 255) is exactly what you want or need a 4-3 defensive end. He displays good timing off the snap and has a quick first step and quickness. His best pass rush move is a devastating spin move, but he really needs to add to his pass rushing repertoire. He also has a relentless motor and that is something that I think defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli will absolutely fall in love with.
Harris is however sometimes non-existent in the run game. He is sometimes slow to diagnose running plays and is hesitant when the play develops. He is also an inconsistent tackler, but I think Marinelli can work his magic with Harris and get him to become a more consistent player in all of these areas.
Overall, Harris has all of the tools you look for in a 4-3 defensive end and would be a great addition to the defensive line rotation. He may be more of a situational pass rusher until he can develop his skill set, but I think Rod Marinelli can bring the best out of him, like he has done so many other players.
64. Dallas Cowboys: JuJu Smith-Schuster, WR, USC
Honestly, I don’t see any way Schuster lasts all the way until the end of the second round when the Dallas Cowboys are on the clock, but this would be the steal of the draft if things actually fell this way.
JuJu Smith-Schuster (6’2″, 220) is the prototypical type of wide receiver that the Dallas Cowboys tend to look for and would be a great addition playing opposite Dez Bryant, especially considering Terrance Williams and Brice Butler are in the last years of their contracts.
I think Schuster is arguably the most NFL ready WR in this draft class. Because of his NFL ready frame, he doesn’t have trouble getting off of press coverage, which is usually the most difficult adjustment rookie WRs have to make in the NFL.
Schuster is a natural his catcher and uses his muscular frame to the best of his ability to shut off defenders while catching the ball. He is also good after the catch and has a wicked stiff arm that he likes to use to keep defenders from making the tackle.
Schuster isn’t a burner, but shouldn’t have a problem creating separation at the next level. He compares to Dez Bryant in a lot of ways, in both physical makeup and the tenacity in which they play the game.
Overall, this would be a tremendous addition to the offense if this is how things work out. It would give Dak Prescott yet another weapon to have at his disposal and would likely cause Dez Bryant to see more single coverage.
