Lions Lose, Cowboys Waiting for Giants or Packers

Jess Haynie

With the Detroit Lions loss tonight to the Seattle Seahawks, we’re one step closer to determining the Cowboys’ first playoff opponent. They are now guaranteed to play the winner of tomorrow’s matchup between the New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers.

The NFL’s playoff system ensures that the highest-seeded team plays the lowest-seeded team in every round. Dallas, as the #1 seed this year, would have played the 6th-seeded Lions if they’d won tonight. Instead, #3 Seattle now heads to Atlanta to play the 2nd-seeded Falcons. The Giants-Packers winner heads to Dallas next Sunday.

The Giants head to Lambeau Field tomorrow in the late afternoon game. While the Packers are on a six-game winning streak and Aaron Rodgers is in the MVP discussion once again, Eli Manning is 2-0 in playoff games in Green Bay. Trying to pick a winner in this one is a 50/50 proposition.

Whoever advances tomorrow, the Cowboys are promised a tough opponent when they begin postseason play in one week.
