Cowboys Draft: Injuries Could Land Western Michigan’s Corey Davis In Dallas

Brian Martin

The off-season hasn’t been kind to Western Michigan’s wide receiver Corey Davis.

Davis is regarded as one of the best WRs in the 2017 draft class, but a shoulder injury has already knocked him out of competing in the Senior Bowl and now according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, an ankle injury has put his chances of performing at the NFL Scouting Combine in doubt.

Missing the Senior Bowl and Combine could cause Corey Davis’ draft stock to take a little bit of a hit. This could be really good news for the Dallas Cowboys, who are in need of another talented WR to play opposite Dez Bryant.

The 6’3″, 213 former Bronco fits the parameters that the Cowboys like in their wide receivers to a T. He is big, physical, and can play either the X or Y position. He would be the perfect complement opposite of #88.

Davis racked up a NCAA-record of 5,278 receiving yards during his career at Western Michigan and led the nation with 19 touchdowns this past season.

I have Davis as my top rated wide receiver in the 2017 draft class, although many people would argue that Mike Williams is the #1 WR. I personally think Davis is a top 15 player and that there would be no way he would still be on the board when the Dallas Cowboys are on the clock at 28.

These injuries knocking him out of two of the most important chances to showcase his skill set might just cause him to slide right into the Cowboys lap in the first round come draft time in April.

The Dallas Cowboys would definitely have to seriously consider adding a player as talented as Corey Davis, even though defensive end and cornerback might be more pressing needs.

For me though, I wouldn’t hesitate a second before writing his name on the draft card. This is a deep draft for defensive ends and cornerbacks, but it’s not every day you get a chance to add one of the best players in the entire draft to your roster.

Plus, Corey Davis already looks like he’s at home playing in AT&T Stadium.

I don’t know about you, but I’m hoping to see Corey Davis wearing the star on his helmet in the end zone at AT&T Stadium for years to come. I mean, he’s already perfected the art of throwing up the X’s.

Do you think the Dallas Cowboys should consider adding Corey Davis?

  1. If he slips to us at #28 I would literally run to the podium with his name on the card! Did you see him throw up the “X”?

    • I’m right there with you Randy. I just couldn’t pass up taking the first or second best WR in the draft class. Everyone is going to be screaming for pass rush help, but at 28 you are probably looking at the sixth or seventh rated pass rusher. The same could probably be said for the CB position as well.

  2. If Corey Davis is there at 28, you gotta draft him, it’s like getting AJ green or Julio without giving up draft picks, assuming another team wouldn’t draft him just for the sake of not letting Dallas have him

  3. Hey brain it’s being reported that Corey Davis won’t be at the combine March 4th, I’m starting to think it won’t be crazy if he falls to us at 28

    • I think he would be the only offensive player that I would draft the first round for the Cowboys, with the exception of O.J. Howard of course. But, I think it’s very unlikely that Howard makes it to 28.
