The Dallas Cowboys need for a dominant pass rusher is a glaring one, and it just so happens that this year’s top 2017 NFL Draft prospect is none other than Texas A&M’s Myles Garrett. Garrett, a dominant defensive end, has been the consensus top player in this draft for some time now, making him a near lock to end up with the Cleveland Browns as the first overall pick.
Understandably, Garrett appears none too thrilled about landing with the Browns, instead putting out this video stating his desire to come play for Jerry Jones and America’s Team.
Myles Garrett clearly knows the situation around the Cowboys right now too, mentioning the looming exit of QB Tony Romo as an asset Dallas can use – along with a collection of draft picks – to move up from the 28th overall pick to the first.
Even assuming the Browns do emerge with a strong interest in Tony Romo, it is more than unlikely the Cowboys can make this unprecedented leap through the draft order to land this dominant pass rusher.
A move like this would also go against the Cowboys’ recent draft philosophy, and Cowboys Nation could forget about coming away with a 2017 draft class similar to last year’s in depth or overall talent after acquiring the top pick and Myles Garrett.
Thankfully, this NFL Draft class features plenty of talented edge rushers, and while the Cowboys won’t be able to make Myles Garrett’s dream come true, they could land a young defensive end that will come into a favorable situation on one of the league’s best teams as a rookie. I have pondered trading up to address this need on the defensive line, with Stanford’s Solomon Thomas as my target for the Cowboys, but even that is much more realistic that making a move to the top of the draft order.
Amazing things are happening with the Dallas Cowboys, thanks in large part to their 2016 draft class. While it would be amazing to add to this talent with Texas A&M’s Myles Garrett in the upcoming draft, it is much more reasonable to expect Will McClay and this front office to find quality players through all seven rounds and make a run at the Super Bowl next year.
Myles Garrett will go make runs at opposing quarterbacks in the AFC North, potentially dreaming about doing so with a star on his helmet someday.
