The on the field drills for the 2017 NFL combine kickoff tomorrow (Friday, March 3). The combine gives us a really good opportunity to watch and get to know some of these prospects that we may not be very familiar with. I started by breaking down the defensive end prospects and then continued on to the cornerback, wide receiver, safety, and running back positions. Today I will end this series by pointing out five tight ends that the Dallas Cowboys should be watching really closely throughout the different combine events.
As things stand right now, the only thing the Cowboys really know about the tight end position is that Jason Witten will be back in 2017 and play out the final year of his contract. Other than that, there are still quite a few uncertainties. Gavin Escobar will be a free agent, and both Geoff Swaim and James Hanna will be battling back from serious injuries they sustained last season. And I wouldn’t hold my breath if you are expecting Rico Gathers to be a major contributor in his second year.
As you can see, finding a young talented TE in the 2017 draft class could possibly end up being a position of need not only for this upcoming season, but for the future. Fortunately, this is a pretty deep TE class, so there are options available for the Cowboys in just about any round.
