Cowboys Re-Sign Quarterback Kellen Moore

The collective world of the National Football League has been on pins and needles awaiting the decision regarding a quarterback on the Dallas Cowboys roster not named Dak Prescott. We finally have some news on someone who fits that description… the Dallas Cowboys have re-signed quarterback Kellen Moore!

Kellen Moore has had quite a ride as a member of America’s Team. He played in relief – severe relief, I might add – of Matt Cassel near the tail end of the 2015 season. Entering 2016 Kellen was slated to be the team’s primary backup to Tony Romo, but a broken leg during the first days of Training Camp changed that plan and the course of Dallas Cowboys History forever.

You see, it was Kellen’s injury that elevated rookie quarterback Dak Prescott to number two on the team’s depth chart, leaving Dak as the starter when Tony Romo was injured a few weeks later. It seems as if the Cowboys are trying to recreate a certain portion of that in 2017, with cemented starter Dak Prescott in place and needing a backup.

Kellen Moore
Kellen Moore unknowingly gave birth to the legend that became Dak Prescott. Now he’ll be backing him up in 2017.

Kellen Moore has been a favorite of Offensive Coordinator Scott Linehan since their time together with the Detroit Lions. Many close to the organization have praised Kellen’s abilities to digest film and all sorts of football information, serving as an added cerebral advantage on the sidelines where the team wears blue and silver.

One of the more unique traits belonging to Kellen Moore is his left-handedness. There aren’t many, if any, quarterbacks active in the National Football League that throw a pass with their left hand. Amazingly enough, not only was a pass thrown but a touchdown was thrown by a Dallas Cowboy in 2016 when Dez Bryant hooked up with Jason Witten against the aforementioned Detroit Lions.

Hopefully Kellen Moore can provide some great veteran leadership for Dak Prescott. He’s already cemented in the history books for opening the door for Dak in the first place. The two as a tandem should be something special.

  1. The 2 factors being the leg, and what veteran QB’s are available.

The Cowboys apparently believe Moore’s leg will be fine, and rate him ahead of or about even with McCown, vis-a-vis Linehan’s offense.

After the adventures of 2015 with Cassel and Weeden, I have a skepticism for the McCown’s of the league.
Brad Johnson, Jon Kitna – on and on.

In 1993, signing Bernie Kosar mid-year after Cleveland – where he had won – released him, turned out gigantic in the NFC Title Game. Aikman went out with a knee to the helmet, Kosar delivered. Textbook case for why a contender should have an experienced backup QB.

So I think they’ll go veteran for the right QB (only), but otherwise if Moore’s leg is good I believe he can move the ball and win games in spot duty. He makes very quick reads and gets the ball out. Downfield offense is an issue because of his size – but then again if he was a tall QB with the same smarts he’d be starting somewhere.

  2. And I see where Sanchez is a F/A with nobody backing up the wheel barrel of cash for him. He does have the playoff W’s, but if he’s in camp I think he has to outplay Moore to stay on the team.
