Despite Roster Turnover, History Suggests Cowboys Should Be Fine In 2017

While the departure of some familiar faces from The Star has some fans worrying greatly about the Cowboys chances in 2017, their recent draft history should actually have you salivating in anticipation of even greater success.

Though starting defensive backs in Barry Church, Brandon Carr, and Morris Claiborne have all left for new teams, both the depth of this year’s NFL Draft class and the ability of the Cowboys front office to draft superior talent should be reassuring.

A few days ago, Jeff Cavanaugh put out on Twitter that he believes the Cowboys will be better at safety in 2017, despite losing two key contributors at the position from a year ago. While the bold statement garnered much criticism and incited debate, I actually don’t think it is that “hot” of a take.

In fact, I agree with Jeff’s prediction, and have even been considering doubling down on the cornerback position as well.

But, I am not willing to commit to that bold of a take just yet.

While scrolling through Twitter, I then found yet another tweet which raised my eyebrows.

Since 2000, the Dallas Cowboys have drafted the second highest number of Pro Bowl selections, and the highest number of AP First Team Selections.

When combining the two numbers, Dallas is tied with the reigning champs in New England for the most Pro Bowl/First Team All Pro selections in the NFL.

You have to admit, that’s pretty impressive.

Of course, to this point, the Cowboys don’t have the rings to show for it like New England does. But, I do believe that the ring could be coming within the next few years, if the Cowboys play their cards right in the 2017 NFL Draft.

With quality starting cornerbacks in Fabian Moreau and Marlon Humphrey likely to be available in round one, and a starting quality safety in Josh Jones likely to be sitting there on day two, the Cowboys seemingly have nowhere to go but up defensively this April.

So while the roster may look thin at some positions at the moment, just remember that the largest HR meeting in the world has yet to take place. It is through the NFL Draft that the Cowboys would like to build, and it is through that draft where they can find some day one difference makers on the defensive side of the ball.

If the time comes that Dallas has drafted, and yet is still not whole in the secondary, then maybe, just maybe, it will be okay to panic for a bit.

But right now, we can take a page out of Joel Embiid’s book and Trust The Process. Especially since our process has already been proven to work.
