Dallas Mavericks Plan to Honor Tony Romo on Tuesday

Tributes and farewell messages for Tony Romo’s retirement have been pouring in all week. The Dallas Mavericks have found their own way to honor one of the city’s greatest sports figures, planning to make him an honorary team member on Tuesday.

Longtime NBA reporter Marc Stein was the first to break the news:

Further details of this special event were published by Stein on ESPN. While he won’t play in the actual game, Romo is expected to participate in pre-game activities and sit on the bench with the team in full uniform. We can be sure that there will be other special moments before the game, and likely at halftime, as the Mavericks pay tribute.

Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle said the following about the plans to recognize Tony Romo:

“Along with Mark Cuban and the Mavs organization, I very much look forward to honoring one of Dallas’ all-time best athletes and people with a very special experience. I can’t get into specific details at this time, but encourage fans to be in their seats when warm ups begin at 715 pm.”

Already eliminated from making the NBA Playoffs, Tuesday will be the Mavericks’ final home game this season. They finish 2016-2017 on Wednesday night in Memphis.

“Tony Tuesday” has been a longstanding institution for Cowboys Nation on social media; a day for appreciative messages, pictures, and memes about the Cowboys’ franchise quarterback. While a new era has begun at QB in Dallas, there’s still plenty of love left to be shown for the departing Romo.

The Mavericks have their own franchise player, and easily the greatest in their team history, potentially retiring this year in Dirk Nowitzki. One has to wonder what sort of conversations Dirk and Tony will have as they hang out on Tuesday.

It’s times like these that I envy you fans who live in Texas and can easily join in some of the local festivities. Please send pictures!
