When asked about who he thought would be an impactful player coming out of the draft on the Dave Dameshek Football Program, Ike Taylor listed several players. Among them? Trey Griffey, who Ike called his sleeper pick. Ike Taylor said he works out with a group of future, current, and former NFL players in the off-season which happen to include Dak Prescott and Trey Griffey.
While I don’t know the extent of their workouts together, Ike stated that Dak has been working with Trey on receiving routes.
Last off-season Ike predicted that Dak Prescott and Jordan Howard would be ballers, so naturally I trust his word. Projected to go undrafted, there’s obviously a lot for Trey to improve upon, however at 6’ 2” 208 lbs. and with 4.53 speed, the raw tools are there to work with.
The stats aren’t impressive; according to Ike Taylor, an Arizona coaching change hampered Griffey’s playing time. Filling out the “pro” column for Trey Griffey, Ike lists an impressive vertical (not invited to the combine so I don’t have an official number), great body control, and excellent hand-eye coordination.
With Terrence Williams and Brice Butler both re-signing, Griffey — if added to the Cowboys — will likely compete against Andy Jones for a practice squad spot. Griffey’s special teams experience may be his way onto the active roster, having racked up 23 career tackles.
Still it’s easier to teach route-running to a gifted athlete than to teach a great route-runner to be a gifted athlete. Acquiring a player based on projections is what the later rounds of the draft and undrafted free agency is all about.
