Jeff Heath Shines During First Day of Cowboys Mini-Camp

Mauricio Rodriguez

This Tuesday, our beloved Dallas Cowboys held their first day of mini-camp practice. Position battles begin earlier than training camp and Jeff Heath knows this. With a safety starting spot up for grabs, you can bet there will be a good battle.

Robert Blanton, Kavon Frazier, rookie Xavier Woods, and Jeff Heath will try their best to play alongside Byron Jones this season.

If you like the Cowboys and you’re on Twitter, then you know who the GOAT is. Not Troy Aikman, not Emmitt Smith… Cowboys Nation’s GOAT goes by the name of Jeff Heath. Even though it’s only June, he is not disappointing us.

He had two interceptions during the first day of mini-camp, including one where he was helping with Dez. Dak is not an easy guy to pick off, but the GOAT did it twice in a day.

We’ll have to wait to see if more Jeff Heath stories like this are told in training camp. But it is fair to say that Jeff Heath has made some plays when he’s been on the field.

Bobby Belt recently pointed out on his show, Cowboys Cast, that since 2013 (including playoff games), Heath is tied for the most interceptions on the team. Not that five is a lot, but considering he hasn’t played as many snaps as others, that’s not a bad stat.

All “GOAT” jokes aside, Jeff Heath has proven to be a very good player, and often an underrated one.

Heath is an athletic safety with flashes of a playmaker, something this defense desperately needs.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him playing constantly this year, especially at the start of the season. Even if Xavier Woods gets the starting job eventually, I’m betting we see #38 a lot more throughout 2017.

Would you like to see Jeff Heath as a starter in 2017?

  1. Although I am a fan of Jeff, I can’t help but worry if the balls thrown were off-target… Not a good sign for our quarterback.

    • Dak reportedly didn’t have a very good day this Tuesday. I get your point, however, I don’t think we should be concerned about it. From what I read, one ball was a tipped one and one he was helping with Dez.

      • Hey, it sounds like Jeff was in the right place both times. Good to hear. And I agree with Travis, I’m looking forward to seeing what Xavier can do.

        • Me too, I think it will be epic to see him play alongside Byron. Thanks for reading Tracy!

  2. I like heath but as a starter im not 100% sure yet He will definently get his playing time but im curious to see what Xavier Woods has to offer , i feel like we need a enforcer in that secondary U kno somebody that can lay the wood

    • What is up Travis? I totally agree with you and I’ve even made it known that Woods was my favorite pick in terms of value for this team. I am sure he will end up as a starter at some point this season. I am interested to see if Heath gets his chance when the season begins though, that would be nice.
