As one of the unquestioned leaders of the Dallas Cowboys, Jason Witten’s voice commands respect. He spent a few minutes last night, following the team’s preseason loss in Los Angeles, to speak on the suspension of Ezekiel Elliott and domestic violence in general.
You can watch the video above for Witten’s full comments. Here are some of the highlights:
“There’s no place for a man to put his hand on a woman. Most of you guys know that’s a situation that has affected my family as a younger kid, so I’ve put a lot of work and attention and have a platform to step out and speak on stopping domestic violence.”
Jason was asked about Elliott, so that he chose to address the issue before his teammate tells you how important it is to him. Still, Witten was hardly unsupportive of Zeke as he continued.
“He’s our teammate and we’ll continue to work through it with him and have this opportunity to grow from it. I think that’s what his focus is right now and we addressed it as a team.”
“Zeke’s been a teammate of mine for the last year and I’ve enjoyed having that relationship with him.”
Witten was also asked how he felt about the punishment Zeke was given compared to other players, and he discussed the standards that all NFL players should follow. The entire session was a reminder of the elder statesman status that Jason has within the organization and the league as a whole.
