Like several other former Cowboys players, Miles Austin and Andre Gurode have returned to Dallas in a new capacity. The retired receiver and center, respectively, are now working with the coaches and scouting department. If history is any indication, larger roles with the organization could be in their future.
Austin, who had a brief but memorable run as the Cowboys’ top receiver from 2009-2010, was always known for his intelligence and work ethic. He recently commented on his experience working with the team during the 2017 draft process:
“It’s difficult for me to say how well I did. But I enjoyed the process and obviously I played and I think that gives you a little bit of insight on guys as well.”
Gurode, who was with the Cowboys offensive line for nine seasons and a five-time Pro Bowler, began working with the scout team last year. He may be following the footsteps of teammate Marc Colombo, who started working with the staff a few seasons back and has since moved into a regular coaching role.
Indeed, many former Cowboys players are now in major coaching positions. None is bigger, of course, than the head coach.
Troy Aikman’s backup for eight seasons, Jason Garrett logically has an appreciation for the experience of former players. It has been reported that Garrett was one of the loudest voices for wanting to draft Dak Prescott last year, a player whose best qualities may have been more evident to a former NFL quarterback than the typical scout.
Another former Cowboys quarterback, Wade Wilson, has been here going back as for as the year 2000. He left for the Bears for a few seasons but was re-hired as QB coach in 2007 when Wade Phillips became head coach.
As already mentioned, former OT Marc Colombo is currently serving as the Assistant Offensive Line Coach under Frank Pollack. His defensive counterpart is Leon Lett, who played on the 90s teams and is working under Rod Marinelli.
Will their jobs with the scout team lead Miles Austin and Andre Gurode to bigger and better things within the Cowboys staff? Given the four examples we just gave, history is definitely on their side.
