Tweet Break: Best of #Cowboys Twitter for June 10th

Previously on Tweet Break here at Inside The Star, we have looked at some of the best sights and sounds from the ongoing Cowboys OTA practices. This week, we will take a bit of a break from that, as the week-that-was in the Twitterverse left us with plenty of other fascinating nuggets related in some way to America’s Team. Without further introduction, it’s going to be a wild ride to the finish line this week. Buckle up, Cowboys Nation! I promised a bumpy ride this week on Tweet Break, and there is no better way to start this journey than with some classic NFC East rivalry talk.

Cowboys Sophomores: S Byron Jones

The 2015 Dallas Cowboys did not exactly leave us with many bright spots heading into the off season. Of course, that is not to say that through the fog of a 4-12 campaign there were not players that overwhelmingly stood out and provided some hope for 2016. From their 2015 draft class, first round selection Byron Jones was impressive all season long in the secondary. Drafted out of UCONN mainly because of his off-the-charts athleticism and Combine numbers, Jones was asked to play as an outside corner, inside corner, free safety, and single-high safety all in his rookie season. Byron was always ready for the challenge, sticking to targets in coverage no matter where he was lined up.

Roster Moves: Dallas Cowboys Replace 3 Players

The Dallas Cowboys have made some changes to the bottom of their roster, releasing three players to sign new ones at each of their positions. No longer with the team is LB Jarrell Harris, DE Caleb Azubike, and OT Justin Renfrow. Taking their places are LB Brandon Hepburn, DE Lawrence Okoye, and OT Bryan Witzmann. The most notable player from this group is likely Okoye, who is a former British Olympic discus athlete. The defensive end has seen time with the 49ers, Cardinals, and most recently the New York Jets.

Cowboys Sophomores: WR Lucky Whitehead

When you look at the projected starters for the 2016 Dallas Cowboys on offense, it is difficult to look past QB Tony Romo, WR Dez Bryant, and now rookie RB Ezekiel Elliott. For Offensive Coordinator Scott Linehan, these are the three players that will most closely determine the success of the Dallas offense. However, a healthy passing duo of Romo and Bryant combined with the rushing attack Elliott will provide certainly opens up opportunities for other players to thrive against unsuspecting defenses. Perhaps no player on the roster fits this role better than Lucky Whitehead at the moment. Signed as an undrafted free agent entering 2015, Whitehead found his role by contributing mostly as a kickoff return specialist early in the year.

Cowboys Sophomores: DE Ryan Russell

There are few players on the Dallas Cowboys that go as under-the-radar as DE Ryan Russell. The state of the team’s pass rush has been talked about endlessly this off season, with every single defensive linemen – from the experienced to the inexperienced – being challenged to step up. Ryan Russell certainly hopes to factor into this equation, after being drafted by the Cowboys in 2015 with the 163rd overall pick in the 5th round. Rookie defensive linemen often face a tough adjustment when they come to the NFL, and this was likely going to be especially true for the Purdue University product in Russell. Spending his final two collegiate seasons in a 3-4 defense, Ryan was going to need some serious work with Rod Marinelli to develop into a consistent edge rusher for the Cowboys.

Marinelli on Randy Gregory: “I’m Training Him Like It’s His Opening Season”

Among the coaching staff for the Dallas Cowboys, Defensive Coordinator Rod Marinelli stands out as a guy with a big personality. He demands a lot from his players and is not shy about letting them – and the media – know when his expectations are not being met. He’ll also be the first to praise a guy that is performing well in his system on the defensive side of the ball, while continuously searching for ways to improve that player. When asked about suspended second-year defensive end Randy Gregory on Wednesday, Marinelli had this to say: “I’m training him like it’s his opening season.

The Dallas Cowboys have signed two more of their nine total rookies from the 2016 draft. Quarterback Dak Prescott and defensive end Charles Tapper have inked their rookie deals with the team. Prescott will receive $2.72 million on his four year contract. The Mississippi State product has already had some pressure put on him with the Dallas Cowboys, as the coaching staff appears poised to enter training camp with Kellen Moore as the primary backup QB.

Cowboys Loaded Backfield Left Off Of NFLN’s Top 5

The Dallas Cowboys offensive line is capable of amazing things. Cowboys Nation certainly remembers what they did in 2014 with DeMarco Murray at the running back position. They then followed this up in 2015 by making Darren McFadden the league’s fourth leading rusher.  McFadden, for one of the first times in his career, looked like the running back the Raiders expected to get when they drafted him with the fourth overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Still, the Cowboys entered the 2016 draft in search of even more explosiveness in the backfield, and used their very own fourth overall pick on Ezekiel Elliott – a dynamic play-maker that fits Offensive Coordinator Scott Linehan’s system beautifully.
