Ben Roethlisberger, the star quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers, will have meniscus repair surgery on his left knee today. It should keep him out for at least few weeks.
The Cowboys travel to Pittsburgh in four weeks. While we don’t have a set timetable yet for Roethlisberger’s return, the Week 10 match-up has to be in question.
Last season, Roethlisberger suffered a small MCL tear and bone bruising in the same knee that caused him to miss four games. He did not have surgery for that injury.
One of the toughest guys to ever play quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger can play through pain. However, recovering from surgery isn’t as simple as pain toleration. Given the past issues with the same knee, the Steelers won’t be cavalier in their handling of the franchise QB’s health.
The Steelers are currently 4-2 and in first place in the AFC North, just one game ahead of the Baltimore Ravens. They will turn to Landry Jones, their fourth-year backup, during Roethlisberger’s absence. Jones is 1-1 as a starter and has appeared in other games, but only has a 76.0 career passer rating.
Pittsburgh hosts the New England Patriots this week, then goes into their bye week. Following that, they will be on the road against the Ravens prior to the Cowboys game.
Dallas has entered their bye week following a victory in Green Bay to move to 5-1. They will host the Philadelphia Eagles before going on a two-game road trip; first the Cleveland Browns and then heading to Pittsburgh.
Ben Roethlisberger is 2-1 in his career against the Cowboys. The last meeting in 2012 was an overtime thriller, Dallas winning on a Dan Bailey field goal after Brandon Carr intercepted the ball.
