Tony Romo’s surgically repaired back is the oldest one on this 2014 Cowboys roster… a far cry from just a few years ago when Jason Garrett took over an aging roster. Here’s hoping the Cowboys’ plan to rest Romo throughout the OTAs and training camp pays dividends; because it is a very different team without him.
And along those lines, no matter how you feel about Brandon Weeden, the decision to sign him this offseason – especially at the numbers to which both sides agreed – was one of the best moves made in the NFL. All 32 NFL teams look vastly different without their starting quarterbacks.
That’s just a fact in a salary cap driven league.
But there’s a reason Weeden was selected in the first round, despite his advanced age at the time he was selected by the Browns. Say what you want about the Oklahoma State alumnus, but he’s got a big-time arm, and his skills are as good as any backup quarterback in the league. And that includes his predecessor, Kyle Orton, who may yet show up on an NFL roster once the season gets going and the inevitable injuries begin to mount up.
He may still telegraph his passes a bit, but he looked generally strong in his half of work against the Chargers Thursday night.
