Breaking Down The Dallas Cowboys’ 2017 Free Agency To-Do List

QB Geno Smith

Sign a Veteran Backup QB

As things stand right now, Tony Romo is the backup quarterback heading into the 2017 season. Since he will likely be playing for another team this upcoming season, the Dallas Cowboys absolutely have to find a veteran QB to back up Dak Prescott.

The popular and most likely scenario is that they re-sign Kellen Moore to take over the backup duties, but I think I might actually prefer someone with a skill set that is more similar to Prescott’s. That is why I think the Cowboys should inquire about bringing in Geno Smith.

Smith has had a run of bad luck since entering the NFL and has never really got the chance to prove what he can do. Out of all of the free agent QB’s on the market, he might be the one that has the skill set that is most similar to Prescott’s.

Of course, Smith is coming off a knee injury and might have to miss some of the off-season practices. But, if he is able to make a full recovery he could become a tradable asset a little further along the in season for a team looking for a QB. Plus, it would allow the Cowboys offense not to have to make a lot of changes if something were to happen to Prescott if Smith was a backup QB.

The Cowboys could choose to bring in both Kellen Moore and Geno Smith and let them battle it out for the backup QB position. Neither player would likely break the bank and I’m all for creating competition throughout the roster.

  1. It’s gonna be kinda hard to trade Romo , what team in their right mind would trade anything for a old fragile qb. Release him and get it over with already !!! It’s not like he’s going to any threats in the NFC We can use that money for Defense. Speaking of Defense that should be the ONLY focus of the off-season , resign back who you can and Draft heavy on the defensive side of the ball BUT if a playmaker TE or WR is available high in the draft you take him but other than that the off season should be simple but effective Don’t waste a good team because you won’t put together the necessary pieces on defense I feel like its the same story going into EVERY off-season DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS Not tryna out score everybody and playing keep away
