We’re about 25 hours away from the 15th kickoff of the season for the Dallas Cowboys, and we already know it’s the 15th kickoff of just 16 this year.
Combined with the performances of other teams in the NFC East, last Saturday’s loss to the New York Jets cemented what many of us have known for some time now, that the Cowboys will not make a playoff appearance this year.
It sucks. But we’ve got a little bit to look forward to this week.
For one, we get to see what Kellen Moore is all about from start to finish. I’ve been watching everyone on social media talk about this guy all week and while much of what I’ve seen is some crazy fans being at one extreme or the other about what Moore’s success means in Dallas, he’ll get another chance tomorrow afternoon to show everyone what he can do.
It wasn’t a special outing last week. He tossed 3 balls into the hands of Jets’ defenders. He also showed his determination to get Dez Bryant involved in the game. Of course, one of those turnovers was on a would-be touchdown pass to Bryant, but he forced it and it went the other way.
As Bobby Belt, RJ Ochoa, and myself discussed earlier in the week on Cowboys Cast, there’s something to be said about Moore’s ability to recognize that there is a star wide receiver that’s generally worth forcing the ball to. Not since Tony Romo first took over the position have we seen a Dallas quarterback be this aggressive about getting the ball in the hands of the number 1 playmaker, which was Terrell Owens back then.
Should Kellen Moore struggle against the 6-8 Bills, the Cowboys have promoted QB Jameill Showers from the practice squad and say that he will be active tomorrow. A lot of us saw a small glimmer of potential in the young quarterback out of Texas (undrafted) during preseason play.
It appears that Jason Garrett and Co. are willing to look under every rock available to them in these final 2 games of the season, and I say go for it. When the season is lost, and you know that it’s due to personnel issues, then you can’t fix the problem without taking some hard looks at the personnel to see what works and what doesn’t. So I like this strategy and I’m prepared for the 4-12 season that’s likely to come from it. You should too.
