When the Greatest 11 in Dallas Cowboys History, Danny White, gave up his punting duties the Cowboys were in need at the position. They set their sights on a gentleman who had been drafted during the 11th round in 1984 by the Detroit Lions… and he made his way to becoming the Greatest 4 in Dallas Cowboys History.
#4: Mike Saxon
After brief stints with the Detroit Lions and the USFL’s Arizona Outlaws, Mike Saxon put one of those bright and shiny Stars on his helmet.
From 1985 through 1992 Mike Saxon was the man who handled the fourth down duties for the Cowboys. He was a very consistent punter who specialized in downing opponents inside their 20-yard line.
Saxon’s 591 punts in a Cowboy uniform are the second most by anyone in franchise history. In total his punts covered an astonishing 24,542 yards, which is the most by any Dallas Cowboy ever. Mike’s final season in Dallas culminated with a victory in Super Bowl XXVII, and he comes in on our Countdown To Kickoff as the Greatest 4 in Dallas Cowboys History.
Check back tomorrow to find out who the Greatest 3 in Dallas Cowboys History is!
