In case you were wondering, my suspension has been lifted from Judge Berman and I am now allowed to quarterback the New England Patriots next Thursday night.
I think they’ll go with someone else, though.
While the NFL, and Tom Brady, will be back in our arms in exactly one week… the Dallas Cowboys hit the field for all the marbles 10 days from now. 10 days! We’re so close that I can taste it! …or maybe that’s just the residual Whataburger from last night.
As always we are going to continue our Countdown To Kickoff series and today we are discussing the Greatest 10 in Dallas Cowboys History.

While the New Orleans Saints took him in the 4th round of the 1967 NFL Draft, the Greatest 10 in Dallas Cowboys History was also selected by the New Orleans Buccaneers in the ABA Draft and the Chicago Bulls in the NBA Draft.
Even though basketball was his favorite sport, this gentleman chose to pursue his career as a punter in the NFL. The New Orleans Saints decided to trade him to the Dallas Cowboys at the end of that 1967 training camp and his road to greatness began.
Ron Widby
Widby technically began his career with the Cowboys in 1968, but he wasn’t wearing number 10. He’d worn the number 11 at Tennessee, but with Danny Villanueva wearing it for the Cowboys, Ron decided to settle on the next best thing – 12.
During his rookie year of 1968 Widby recorded the NFL’s longest punt – a booming 84 yarder!
A year later when the Greatest 12/Cowboy in Dallas Cowboys History, Roger Staubach, returned from the Navy… he asked if he could have the number 12. He’d worn it at the Navy and it meant something to him.
Ron was an easy-going guy, he just wanted to have any number. So he moved to 10.
With a new number on his back Widby was a punting machine and found himself as a First-Team All-Pro in 1969. Things couldn’t possibly get any better, could they? The following season inn 1970 the Dallas Cowboys reached the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history, losing to the Baltimore Colts.
Fortunately the team rebounded a year later with a victory in Super Bowl VI over the Miami Dolphins. Widby recorded 5 punts in the big game before it was all said and done.
#10: Rod Widby
Ron Widby played four seasons in total for the Dallas Cowboys, ending his Cowboy career with a Super Bowl ring. His 247 Cowboy career punts put him at 6th in franchise history; however, Ron Widby’s 84-yard punt from the 1968 season is the longest one ever recorded by a Dallas Cowboy.
Not only did Ron Widby wear the number 10 in championship fashion, but he passed the torch of the number 12 on to someone who would do so as well. The foot that booted the longest punt in Dallas Cowboys History, Ron Widby, is the Greatest 10 in Dallas Cowboys History.
