It’s finally that time. The 2016 NFL Draft is just hours away and we will finally know exactly who the Dallas Cowboys will be adding to their 2016 roster.
By now you’ve probably already heard the names that have been linked to the Cowboys: Ezekiel Elliott, Joey Bosa, and Jalen Ramsey.
If you’re anything like me, you’ve done as much research on these three prospects as possible and should have a pretty good idea of each player strengths and weaknesses.
I for one would pound the table for Elliott if I was in the Cowboys draft room tomorrow night. I don’t care that the running back position has been devalued here recently. Elliott is hands-down a difference maker in the NFL, and that is especially true if he’s running behind the Cowboys dominant offensive line.
If you can’t tell already, Elliot is the players name I would be writing down on the draft card when it’s a Cowboys time to draft in the first round.
Joey Bosa’s name has been linked to the Cowboys because they are in desperate need of past rushers in defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli’s 4-3 defensive scheme. They have been terrible at getting to the quarterback the past several years and the fact that both Randy Gregory and DeMarcus Lawrence are expected to miss the first four games of the season only adds to their desperation, at least on the surface.
Bosa would be a solid selection, but at number four overall I’m really looking for someone who will be a difference maker for years to come. I don’t know if that is the type of player you would be getting in Bosa.
That brings me to Jalen Ramsey.
It’s rumored that the Cowboys view Ramsey is a cornerback in the NFL, and according to the tape I watched of him, I would evaluate him more as a safety.
There is no denying that Ramsey is one the most physically gifted defensive backs we have seen over the past several years, but that doesn’t always translate to success in the NFL.
My own personal evaluation of Ramsey shows that he really struggles when he has to turn his back to the quarterback and run down the field with the receivers. He is at his best when he is able to make plays in front of him. That’s I believe is best suited to play safety in the NFL.
Don’t get me wrong. I would be fine if the Cowboys decided to draft Ramsey with their first-round draft pick, but I think they would be making a mistake if they expect him to play cornerback.
Do you really want to invest so much in another CB when you’ve already failed miserably with Morse Claiborne and Brandon Carr?
Also, if Ramsey is a better safety in the NFL, do you really want to draft a safety so highly?
Luckily, I’m not the one that’s going to be making the decision that will affect the franchise for years to come and my job isn’t on the line if this is yet another failed attempt to solidify the back end of the defense.
I’m free to voice my own personal opinion without any repercussions, unless it’s from those of you who don’t agree with my opinion and if that’s the case I encourage you to try and convince me otherwise.
Overall, I’m holding out the hope that in a few hours time when the Dallas Cowboys are finally on the clock that I don’t see a draft card turned in with Jalen Ramsey’s name on it.
I for one am on the Ezekiel Elliott hype train and I hope it’s leaving the station with THE STAR shining like a halo atop his head on the Cowboys draft cap.
You say you wouldn't want to draft a safety that high so why would you take a running back that high? I think Elliot is going to be a great player but I think you can find good rbs in the later rounds. (Demarco Murray 3rd Round) McFadden quietly had a great season last year. Ended up 4th in the league in rushing and that was after not starting the first few weeks of the season as well playing with a back up qb and no Dez Bryant. McFadden won't be mistaken for Adrian Peterson but he's definitely a serviceable running back. I think Alfred Morris can be solid as well
All valid points, but I just think Elliott is a difference maker and changes the entire dynamic of the entire team. Yes, McFadden and Morris can be serviceable RBs, but I don't think there even in the same conversation as Elliott.
Yes you are entitled to your own opinions…not your own facts. Facts significantly stack up AGAINST drafting ANY RB with such a high pick as more often than not those (Trent Richardsons) are misses. Rare is it indeed a top5 pick at RB turns into…well…adrian Peterson. I too have heard all the knocks on Ramsey as a cover CB, so…given both players play positions/have skill sets not ideal why not take the best DE in this draft…Bosa? Your argument against taking him is pretty weak.
Bosa to me as a left side defensive end and those can be found later in the draft. The Cowboys need a right side defensive end with Lawrence's suspension. I personally prefer Jonathan Bullard in the second round if they're going to draft a left side defensive end.
CJ Spiller, Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch, LaDainian Tomlinson… facts? The facts are that great RBs usually come from the top 15 in round 1. It's not often that teams take them that high, but when they do, 8/10 times it's a winner, like the names above. Can't be against taking risks, not when the draft is comprised of hundreds of risks, one for every player drafted. That said, Elliott wouldn't disappoint me, but that's if Ramsey isn't there at #4. If both are there, I don't know who I'd want. But I do know that either guy will help this team. That's all we're really after here. Another DE tho? How many times are we gonna go to that well? Time for our guys to get their shit together and do what we drafted them to do. Maybe if DE is that big of a need, Dallas will package one of them in a trade back into the 1st. We'll see. But the facts show that getting pressure from the line is not as important with more turnovers from our secondary, which Ramsey helps provide. Also shows that a well rested defense is infinitely better than a tired defense, and Elliott helps with that. With these two picks, it's a win-win, either way. If improving the team is your focus, of course. Some guys just like to be right, though… Thanks for reading.
Like you, I would be fine with either Ramsey or Elliott as the Cowboys pick. I think either player helps the team in different ways for years to come. My preference however is Elliott. Can't wait till this debate is finally settled in a few hours.
Well here's the thing on Bosa: You've got TWO defensive ends suspended right now for drug-related charges. In my mind, you've got to be gun shy about Bosa who told teams at the combine that the reason he was suspended for the 1st game of 2016 is because he refused to take a drug test.
I know Jerry Jones is on record saying they would/will still consider Bosa but behind closed-doors I have to think they're not interested in a guy with drug-related concerns right now.
