Cowboys Release DE Ryan Russell

The Cowboys will make a lot of roster moves over the next few days. Some will merit more attention than others.

Defensive end Ryan Russell, their fifth-round pick in last year’s draft, has been let go. He appeared to be saying goodbye with the following tweet:

The message prompted one Cowboys fan to ask team insider Bryan Broaddus (@BryanBroaddus) if Russell had indeed been cut. Broaddus confirmed the released with a clear and simple response, “Yes sir they did.”

Russell had every opportunity to emerge this year with issues at the defensive end position. However, he has been outperformed consistently by David Irving and Jack Crawford. Mike McAdoo, the second-year end out of North Carolina, could be the beneficiary of Russell’s release.

That said, Dallas could be very active on the waiver wire as other teams make their cuts. Defensive end may be their top focus, so McAdoo can’t feel very safe even after this move.

As for Ryan Russell, he only dressed for one game last season so he will be eligible for the Cowboys’ practice squad. Unless another team is interested, I suspect that’s where he’ll land.
