The Dallas Cowboys have released Jay Ratliff today.

The defensive tackle was eligible to come off the physically unable to perform list this week. Ratliff has been on the PUP list since the start of training camp due to a strained hamstring, and a sports hernia surgery.

The relationship between the four-time Pro Bowler and the Cowboys has been strained the last year while he battled a handful of injuries.

Ratliff signed a five-year $48.6 million contract extension with the Cowboys in 2011. The team restructured his contract in the spring to free salary-cap space hoping he would return healthy enough to play. According to the Cowboys website most of the $10.268 million cap charge will roll over to next season.

The DE also attracted attention late last season after a negative exchange with Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, and more negative attention at the beginning of 2013 for a DWI.

Ratliff had 25 sacks in 104 games.
