It has been said throughout numerous NFL off seasons that the teams that re-sign their own free agents are the ones that win. By that logic, the Dallas Cowboys should be doing plenty of winning in 2016.
Today, they added to their list of free agent signings by bringing back restricted free agent safety Jeff Heath on a four year deal.
Heath has served as a core special teams player for the Cowboys during his time here. This past season, he saw 68% of the team’s special teams snaps while also taking 205 snaps at safety – where he recorded two interceptions in a week 10 loss to Jameis Winston and the Buccaneers.

With Heath now factoring into the team’s long-term plan at safety, it gives Dallas the potential upgrade they have been seeking over Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox. While both players will likely still be on the roster for next season, Heath could see a significant number of snaps at the position playing next to Byron Jones.
Of course, fan favorite prospect Jalen Ramsey (who can play safety or corner) could still find his way onto the roster come April 28th when Dallas enters the first round of the NFL draft with the 4th overall pick.
For now, yet another pivotal player for the Cowboys defense and special teams unit is back in the silver and blue for the next four years.
