The Dallas Cowboys should refrain from taking defensive line in the first round, now before you try and run me out of town lets take a moment to understand the logic here. Without question the Cowboys biggest weakness is on the defensive line with the impending free agency’s of Jason Hatcher and Anthony Spencer, not to mention the game of musical chairs Rod Marinelli played with his “rushmen” a season ago. You could also throw in the fact that Ware could be playing elsewhere in 2014.
When looking at all of the players involved in this years draft, one can’t help but notice the abundance of defensive linemen available. Also it isn’t a foregone conclusion that Hatcher and Spencer won’t be back in Dallas for the 2014 season. The Cowboys have already reached out to their agent to express interest in contract negotiations. If either one re-signs then defensive line isn’t as big as a need.
Regardless of the scenario, the Cowboys can ill-afford to go into the first round with only one position in mind. That kind of mentality forces you into a situation like Quincy Carter. As I stated above, defensive line is extremely deep in this draft. One position that isn’t stockpiled is the safety position. Safety is a huge need for this team.
Barry Church has become a liability in pass coverage, while he may be the best sure tackler on the team the staff can’t afford to overlook his weakness. It isn’t just Church that is a liability in coverage but the defensive line does play a role in that aspect but you need playmakers in the secondary. That is why I believe that the Cowboys should be looking at Calvin Pryor and Ha’Sean Clinton-Dix. The Cowboys can’t count on a player like Matt Johnson so they need to upgrade the position in this draft.
I feel strongly that the pick will be on defense but lets hope for the success under Marinelli that they get him some playmakers in the secondary.
Well I won’t run you out of town I will just disagree with you. This would be like putting the cart before the horse. In this type of “D” you need to put pressure on the QB,. If I had to choose how the first round pick would be spent it would be on the line NOT the secondary! You cannot say “well if our secondary can hold up for 4-5 seconds that will make our D-line better”. No but if you put pressure on the QB your secondary can just be good!
I don’t disagree with you at all. I just think they need to be more open minded here. Don’t go into the first round set on a certain position/player. I personally want a better safety and there aren’t a whole lot of them available.
